So I'm getting a revolver I need for an upcoming training class. It will be primarily used as a backup gun for the purpose of the class and range gun thereafter. Can anyone suggest a decent revolver that is chamber is .38/.357 magnum that won't break the bank? TIA

Or LCR - if the backup gun will be primarily CCW.

I'm a fan of the SP101, with either the bobbed or exposed hammer, but that is because I prefer an all steel revolver.

However - I have to admit, the LCR almost has me sold on the whole lightweight, integral crimson trace set up. The option of buying the same gun in .22 for plinking with the same platform is another plus.

Lot of love for Ruger in this thread, so far.

They overengineer the hell out of their revolvers, that's for sure.

For the OP, if it's to be a backup gun and then a range gun, I think an SP101 with a 2"-4" barrel or a S&W 686P with a 2"-4" barrel would be best. The barrel length is completely up to you but the longer the barrel the heavier it will be since it is all steel.

Ruger SP 101

I have the three inch model and I love it. They now make a SP 101 357, 4 inch barrel. Very nice gun. Much cheaper than the SW revolvers.

Yea the revolver is gonna be used rarely just for range time and courses that require a revolver. My real back up is my XDs .45

FIFY. Nothing about a Ruger is graceful.

I'd look for an old Smith model 66 o something along those lines. You can usually pick those up pretty cheap. I like the Ruger revolvers alright, but they are built like a damn brick.

Go try and find a S&W Model 66 Combat for cheap. I would like to know where that is.

Hard to beat them when looking for a new "affordable" revolver, the S&W's are pricey.

Another vote for the GP 100 Ruger. I love mine. Great weapon.

I don't mean it to be a bad thing.... I'd probably just find an old Model 66 or 686 before I bought the ruger

The LCR might be easier to find, and could be another CCW later down the road. I have one. It is a great small revolver.

However, the GP100 is my favorite handgun. Built like a tank.
