As long as you carry in a good holster (preferably a kydex one or at a minimum a hybrid) that covers the trigger guard. that is all the safety that gun needs.
I agree entirely that a quality holster is very important, but a holster doesn't have to be Kydex or hybird (Kydex holster w/ leather backing against the body) in order to be safe. Folks safely carried handguns in leather holsters long before the availability of Kydex. I personally prefer leather over Kydex and can assure you that my all leather holsters are as safe as any holster can be. Have you thought yet on how you intend to carry your new gun once you get it?

While you are trying different options, check out the Sig P238 or P938. They can be found in your general price range and are great CC considerations. Sweet shooters with night sights. I carry mine cocked and locked. My other favorite is not as easy to conceal, the Walther PPQ but it's the best handgun I own in terms of accuracy and trigger pull.

This is less significant than people think. The barrel is so short that there will already be a good bit of flash, although less if you use high quality defensive ammo (designed to be low-flash).
But the reasons I wouldn't carry a ported gun are that 1. the ports will beat you up pretty bad shooting from retention or low-ready and 2. there's a chance of debris buildup in the barrel since those gaping holes are there.
I think this has been covered pretty well already but as long as you have a good holster that covers the trigger, the manual safety adds an extra step that you're highly likely to forget about under stress. You may accidentally engage it or forget to disengage it.

Agree. I use the overhand rack because it's a universal motion whereas a slide release can vary between guns. But I think as long as you're consistent in your training it's user's choice.
You also need to decide if you want to carry a double stack or a single stack gun. The single stack will be a bit thinner but will be down a bit on rounds. The double stack will be thicker but have more rounds. If it's your first I would probably advise the single stack so you'd be more likely to carry it in a variety of outfits. And once you get used to carrying it you can consider getting a double stack to put in your carry rotation.
My personal two favorite single stacks on the market right now are the Shield and the Walther PPS M2. I think those have excellent ergos and are proven designs.

The image may have been enhanced - don't know. But there were several images similar to this floating around gun forums for years.
FWIW, to the best of my knowledge, Glock discontinued ported/compensated barrels 3-4 years ago. So it's pretty clear that demand for ported barrels (Glock called them "C" models) has really dwindled.
I still have a factory ported barrel for a G23 that I swapped out of a carry gun years ago. As was noted earlier, these things are loud, and produce a very noticeable "blast" to the shooter's face. If people still insist on carrying one, they really need to be wearing safety glasses.

Can't believe you didn't plug the FN in this thread

It is right out of my price range, but I might have to give it a try.

It is beautiful and also criminally underrated by the 'average joe' shooter.. not many people even realize FN makes pistols, but do the research.. the FNS is a might fine firearm

The guy seems to have his mind set on a single stack. If FN were to make a single stack version of their FNS I'll go buy one today.

Completely agree. My full sized FNS9 is one of my favorite guns to shoot, as was outlined in my review a few weeks ago.

KAHR CM9s are less than $400
And I don't want fire spitting up from my slide if I'm in a night fight

Not really. Just starting with what seems the most popular options. I'm going to try another range this week that has more of a selection to try out. I would rather spend a little extra money now deciding what I want versus buying something and hate it, and never carry it (which is the whole purpose of this process).

Yeah it's a good deal. I have that exact gun and ordered one from there. The concerns over the ported barrel for carry are way overblown.
It shoots. The bullet has the velocity to kill.
Get the gun.
Just be sure to inspect the magazine, load it completely and let it sit.
Then completely clean the gun and only lubricate the 7 lubrication points.

Just like the 17L/24 Glock does batches of these periodically. I picked up a NIB 17C Gen4 in Dec, b/c I'm a 17 collector. They released 17C/19C & 22C/23C last year.

This is exactly why I think you are set on a single stack - they're more comfortable to carry and you're much more likely to not leave it at home.
My first carry gun was a single stack and I don't regret it at all. My Kahr CM9 carries more comfortably than my M&P9c, although I carry both at different times and in different clothes.

It honesty does nothing and I always felt it was a little bit of wasted money on the ported barrel. But $500 is a good deal. You can find non ported barrels for less money though

I paid $280 for my kahr cm9. It was in great shape

In my non-expert opinion, this is the best way to 'research' which pistol is best for you
And as far as single stack vs double stack, nobody who has ever HAD to use their weapon has ever said 'damn, I had too many rounds' after the fact... just something to consider
