You can't go wrong with either of those. It is gonna come down to which feels best in your hands.

On two occasions I've pulled the trigger and it felt like the safety was on. The first time it did that I played with the bolt and it went off. This morning it did the same thing but didn't go off. Bolted another round in it and trigger pulled and click. Pulled the bullet out and it was obvious that the firing pin didn't strike hard enough. Bolted in 2 more rounds and same thing happened.

Got home and pulled the bolt out. Sprayed Rem oil in it where the firing pin hole is. Shot perfectly 2 rounds.

Gun had a real good cleaning last year so it shouldn't be that dirty

That's odd. I've never heard of anything like that.

Have you checked with Remington or a gunsmith? How old is the gun?

father in law has the xbolt in .270 topped with a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x50...it's the sweetest "out of the box" rig I've ever shot...and I'm a HUGE remington fan

Its pretty old. Remington has an issue with the 700s. CNBC did an investigation into it. Considered getting a new bolt and trigger assembly for it. Bought it last year and its cost me 3 deer this year

I can't complain about my 700. But it's also the only deer rifle I've owned so take it with a grain of salt.

Yep my hats why I asked how old it was. I remember hearing about that. I meant I had never heard of anything like that in my first hand experience. If I remember correctly, in that investigation piece, Remington never admitted to any issues.

Love the tang safety on my Browning plus the ability to clear the chamber with the safety still on

Remington claims that all guns returned to the that had malfuncions they were never able to duplicate the malfunction. Kinda sounds like the issues with the 700s is in older models and still rare. That's my luck though. I get the lemon. I've heard enough people sware by them so if I found a deal on one I'd prob jump.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one. I like mine. I have a browning A bolt too.

The A bolt is a 7mm mag so it has a 26" barrel and is heavier. I have the 700 mountain rifle and it is very lightweight and small. I like them both but I haven't taken the browning out of the safe in about 3 years.

Never had any problems with 700's we've been shooting the last thirty years. And that's with a lot of 700's all shot, a lot. I'd send that one back and tell them something is wrong with it if that happened to me.

Another vote for the 700. Bought my second one last year. Got the same gun you want, 30-06, and wouldn't by different if I had the chance. Think both are good guns and great companies if you have to deal with them.
The other 700 you have should be a cheap fix. I would call a local gun smith.
