I will personally be waiting for the release of the Springfield XDS 9mm. I currently have the XDM 9mm sub-compact (3.8 in barrel). I love it and can conceal carry it fairly well, However I would like to have something a little smaller and I happen to love the features and capabilities of the XD series... But that is just my .02

Tell me more. I don't think a plastic gun will ever catch on though....

Are you looking for a collector's item or for a defensive handgun?

For reliability and practical accuracy, the modern polymer semi-autos (Glock, S&W M&P, XD) are absolutely the way to go. Don't listen to anyone who recommends a 1911, HiPower, Beretta 92, or anything else like that. It's not that they are no good, it's that they are not as good/practical/reliable as the others.
And the Sig 938 seems to me like an answer to a question that should never have been asked.

If you want a tool, buy a Glock or M&P. If you want something really cool, then yeah buy a 1911 or HiPower.

A broad statement like that deserves information to back it up. Would you please share w/ us the objective studies that back up that statement? Do not include someone's personal opinions, uncorroborated internet stories or information provided by a gun maker in support of their product. Admittedly, it may be hard to define "good" and "practical," but "reliable" can be defined. I'd like to know the definition of "the others," as well. A lot of guns could be categorized as, "the others."

hunt166,
What's the proposed new gun going to used for? A concealed carry gun needs different traits than does a non-cc personal defense gun (i.e. car/truck gun or home gun).

If it's NOT for cc, one could make a good argument for a Browning Hi-Power if you already like the HP and are well versed in it's manuel of arms. The Beretta is a good one to consider if you like the external safety and DA/SA type of action. Altough I like the 1911, I don't see much use for it in 9mm, as long as one can find a non-1911 that they can shoot/handle well. Plenty of 9mm's that lighter and have larger mag capacity than does a 1911 9mm. Sig makes some nice DA/SA 9mm. Ruger's version has been on the market a long time.

Then there are the striker fired 9mm's, including Glock, S&W M&P, Ruger SR9, etc.

What do you want in the gun?

This is just for me to take to range/camp where we shoot handguns and .22's etc as well as use in home and in truck. I apreciate the information and help and i am sure should I decide to get the cc i would need another specifically for that. not married to the 9mm 100%, just like the caliber. My shooting buddy is trying to talk me into the 45 so that is still an option. in the end I guess it will come to personal preference and comfort. have been leaning to the baretta but will check out the sig's - have not looked at them yet.

Thanks again for the help!
