I have a youth 870 that I used for rabbits. It’s small and easy to swing, but kicks like a damn mule. If you can afford it find a semiautomatic for him.

I have an older Remy 11-48 28GA with a 26” modified. My son is 10 and using it now. You can find them used for $350-$400 on Gunbroker. Mine was made in the 50’s and runs like a top. I use it to quail hunt sometimes.

Check out the tristar youth semi auto 20ga. They can be found for under $400. They also come with an extra stock that’s bigger to put on when he grows. Friend of mine’s boy has been shooting one for few years with no trouble.

Mine started on the Mossberg 510 mini 410. I think you can still get them for <300.
Wasn't very smooth, but a kid isn't going to be quick on a pump anyway.
Quick highjack.

It'll probably never be smooth. I disassembled/cleaned/lubed every part in mine, nothing helped. Finally sent it back to Mossberg and asked them to do whatever it took to make it smooth for a kid to rack (told them I'd happily pay).

Gun came back last week. Mossberg changed every part I had cleaned/lubed. Zero improvement. Tomorrow I'm taking the Dremel to the interior of the forend. That's the only friction zone I haven't addressed).

All that said, it's a good, very light weight .410, which is important for the little ones trying to hold it and learn to shoot at the same time.

Go to walmart and get a hatfield 20 gu. simi auto, excellent
starter gun and cheap. I say this because I have heard nothing but good about this gun.

I bought my oldest lawn a Franchi 20 gauge gas operated when he was about eight. But a youth stock on it. It has had thousands of rounds put through it on two trips to Argentina by both my boys. Best gun I ever bought. Kept the normal stick and switched it out as they outgrew the shorter one. More expensive but it will last a lifetime. Good luck!

My son is 10 and loves his 20 gauge 870 youth. He had the mossburg 20 gauge pump first, which is horrible the 870 shoots like a Cadillac compared to that gun. I don't think the 870 kicks bad at all

I just think everyone is used to shooting the fancy autos now. The 870 youth is a great starter gun. Many of hunter harvested their first animal with this gem

When my boy was little I bought him the Rossi matched barrel .243 & 20g. I think around $200 plus scope. Just a single shot, but a good starter gun plus it keeps him from pumping away at it just because he can.

I actually love using the .243 barrel myself, but the 20g kicks like a damn mule.

Buy the 870 you won't regret it. The compact is just the youth model same length as that Maverick. The Maverick is less sturdy and kicks harder

Weatherby SA-08 youth 20. Gas operator. Smooth shooter. My 11 yo loves to shoot it. I almost ruined him with a light pump. Now he's bustin clays with confidence. My friend gave his son a mule kickin pump and I watch him close his eyes and cringe before he pulls the trigger. Find a auto in 28 or 20 that fits them very well and he'll be out shooting you by the time he is ready for a full size.

My 28ga A5 is my favorite shotgun, getting a bit spotty finding ammo but it is the GOAT.

Would it happen to be a Browning BPS? I had one, sold it and recently found a choke that I had for it if you interested.
