We need to know your total budget (rifle, scope, mounting hardware, etc)

ETA: And don't overstate what you want to spend. No matter the number you post we will come up with a setup that is toeing the line.

There are LOADS of good options out there in pretty much every price range.

Yes you can. Rustington blows now. IF you can find a pre-freedom group one, then I suggest you buy it.

I'll put in for the Remington 700 too. Even though mine is the lower end, I wouldn't trade it for a thing. I'm actually looking for a good deal on a CDL at the moment. Can't go wrong.

I'm a big fan of Tikka's and also of the Browning X-Bolts and own more than one of each, but the Winchester's are known as the Rifleman's Rifle for a reason. Something just flat screams classic deer rifle like a wood stocked Model 70 .270. That ain't no natural light drinker's deer rifle right there

I am partial to my browning a-bolt with B.O.S.S. hasn't let me down yet and is a pleasure to shoot not to mention really accurate with 130 grain ballistic silver tips.

Honest question: why?

I've never deer hunted before but am looking to get into it. I asked a friend who hunts (with bow as well) about what caliber gun to get. He mentioned a .270 is a good option because it can take down deer and elk. I thought I read these have power to shoot pretty far too.

So can you explain why .270 isn't ideal? Or maybe explain the best 2-3 options?

Don't listen to him. .270 is a phenomenal caliber that is more than capable of killing deer and elk from quite a distance.

Anytime you hear somebody bad mouth the .270win, they're either trolling or stupid so ignore them.

It is one of the best all around southeastern US calibers.
