I can get a 10 round box of Longbeards for $26 while a 5 round box of TSS cost $47. Are the TSS really that much better?

Yes, regardless of what you're shooting at. It's wicked.

Being able to shoot a #7,8,9 and have a really high number of pellets on target is huge. It’s like a hornets nest once you figure out the right choke and shot

Killed a hog at 45 yards last year while Turkey hunting with the TSS, didn’t get a shot at a Turkey. It was running, as the group spooked when they saw me, and I saw about a 70 lb sholt in some tall grass, running. I shot on the fly , and it kicked me pretty dang hard in my SBE3, kind if more than I expected, tbh….dang. Anyway, though I missed as nothing happened, didn’t hear a thing, didn’t see grass moving/twitching, but kind of lost the sight picture from the recoil…. Walked out in the grass, and there was the hog, stone cold dead, very impressive…..

From what i read here on this forum, the TSS is awsome.
However, i shoot longbeard #5. Perfectly happy. I don't dwell on equip. Just get it working and get in the woods patterning. Better time spent.

I get that TSS is great, but have XRs failed anyone? If it ain’t broke…

I have an uncle that claims he lets his grandson turkey hunt with a 410 loaded with TSS and he can kill at 60 yards.

All of them will kill a turkey just fine
tss is a blessing and a curse. It patterns great but people are taking much longer shots than they should thinking it’s magic
Shooting one at 60 yards just isn’t my cup of tea.

TSS is more dense and therefore smaller shot size can be used to yield the same result down range. I think the cost comparison is worth it when you start toting a 20 vs a 12.

In a 12 gauge, even the XR is overkill. I use TSS because I want to use a 20.

Pretty detailed test of some shells by outdoor life.
Buddy of mine smashes them with TSS but he also smashed them with regular ol lead as well. If you want to give yourself the best chance at a bird at distance then it’s better as for the cost a box will last most people 3-5yrs if they keep some lead for shooting (coons, coyotes, snakes)

I was a full on tss convert much earlier than most. They are better than even the converts make them out to be. However, i'm going back to larger loads it other non tox. Too many people ending up with $5-10K dental bills from 9 and 9.5 tss.

If they were $100/box would still be one of the cheaper parts of hunting.

I started hand loading TSS 15 years ago using Hal Abbott’s old recipes. After seeing it in action I immediately gave up my 12 gauge and went to a 20 instead.
A full load of #9’s with a Black Diamond choke smokes them like they’ve been struck down by the hand of an angry god at 40 yards. As an added benefit; carrying the 20 is a lot easier on a full days hike.
I’ve harvested dozens of birds with TSS. Unparalleled lethality. Worth it for sure.

I am shooting the Boss Tom 20 ga 3" #9. It is the same shell I was shooting from TSS except it's 2oz instead of the 1 1/2oz. Its a couple of dollars less a box but they are still almost $10 a shot.

60 is pushing it. But I have a 410 and a turkey is stone cold dead at 40
