The few times that I actually use it will probably be hunting. I just didn't want to limit the capabilities too much.
If you want to make ethical shots on game at 1000 yds you need to shoot the gun way more than a few times. The BDC reticle isn't a magic crutch that is going to help you at that range either since the markings likely won't correspond with the ammo you are using and you need to play the wind drift. Factory ammo will likely have an ES higher than acceptable for consistent shots at long range as well. Just some things to think about. If you really want to be Chris Kyle with your rifle you need a lot of range time and you need to get into reloading and load development. There's plenty of people that consistenly ring steel at 1000 yds with a $500 10x scope. The tool is only as skilled as the user.

I just bought Ammo at $130 per box.

Ouch!! Keep your brass and consider taking up handloading.

That is another reason why I shied away from the Nosler rounds or the RUM rounds and went with the regular 300 Winchester magnum for my rifle build. And granted I may mess around and shoot at a thousand yards every now and then but it's going to be a hunting rifle setup for 500 yards or less.

I hope that I never have to kill anything at 1000 yards. If I hunt with it, I would probably stick to 500 or less. I was just saying if I wanted to shoot 1000 yards at the range.

I have a few Vortex, Leupold and Redfield scopes.
One of my vortex is the 6-24 Viper PST FFP. I believe it will do the job your asking and fit's your budget. The thing is like a telescope, it's long and has a bit of heft to it as well. The glass is plenty clear and often referred to as a poor mans night force. I can't comment on that. What I can say is, it is very "bright" if that's a proper description. I don't have anything else with that type of magnification however I did compare it to my low end Leupold Mark AR mod 1 with tac moa firedot reticle. Looking across a pond about 300 yards with the sun setting behind me. Both scopes were clear enough to see screws in a sign on the other side of the pond. The Vortex did not have the richness in color (if you will) compared to the Leupold. Both scopes show blades of grass in great detail. I'm not sure how to describe the sight picture other than what I previously mentioned "color richness" kind of like fishing with and with out polarized lenses.

I'm strongly considering the Vortex or the $1400 Nightforce. Thank you very much for sharing

A 500 yard shot is still a long shot too. It certainly helps to have good glass to make long range shots but you can certainly ring steel at 500+ with less expensive optics if you put in the range time to dial everything in and that is going to be costly in the platform you are wanting to do it with. There is no harm no foul for getting on the range and trying a 1000 yard shot but get ready for a lot of trail and error and please consider strongly about taking an animal at that range before you are really ready for it.
You for sure need to be looking at reloading as well if you are remotely serious about getting into the long range game.

I would also suggest talking with Chris at interstate guns/sport optics in Hammond their knowledge is unsurpassed in scopes and optics. If you ever pass through there you can put your hands on anything listed in this thread and even more high dollar stuff.

Just out of curiosity what kind of targets are you guys shooting at 1000 yards. I would imagine steel but what size target would be considered a good hit?
Posted on 1/17/18 at 5:24 pm to jdavid1
I typically shoot paper and use two cell phones on face time to tell where we are hitting.

The OP has the 1,000 yard range.
I sometimes shoot at a buddies range that can go to 1,000 and we shoot at paper mostly (sometimes steel) but I don't really shoot at those distances anymore since I don't have the time to really invest in it anymore.

Two things. Shop for your ammo. It can be had for much cheaper. Low end about $80 a box to learn with.
Also, don't forget the mount. To get really long range you will, depending on how he adjustability of the glass and how far you want to go, need a 20 Moa mount.
I have a 338LM in Baton Rouge, used to shoot it allot, don't any more.
Collect your brass and reload. That is where you can make your gun shine for a reasonable price.

In that price range I would be looking at a Gen 1 vortex razor 5-20x50 I believe. If you want to go up to $2k check out the Gen 2 Razor. I can’t speak for the gen 1 but I have a Gen 2 riding on a Desert Tech SRS A-1 6.5creed and between the scope & the gun they make me look like a fricking champ.
