My FIL told me he had a bunch of wood from a free that fell during Ida. Sent my son to go pick it up and turns out it’s live oak.

This Champion 7 ton splitter I have doesn’t want any part of this shite

Edit to add: No, I wouldn't. I would just walk around tree when I went that way and watch it slowly rot over the years.

This is how my broke arse HOA handles it.

It sucks. Takes forever to dry out and hard as hell to split. More trouble than it’s worth in my opinion.

Live oak sucks to split because it usually has knots all in it, and the grain usually twists around. It also barely burns when it gets rotten

Must be an in-bred cousin of pecan.
That wood is the toughest, gnarliest thing I have ever tried to split. Great smoking or fire wood, but it is tough as shoe leather.

I split a live oak a few months ago. That stuff has some nasty grain. It'll be great camping firewood next winter but it was definitely challenging. Even using the 25 ton splitter we rented, we had to be be precise with the wedge placement. It was worth it to me as I got a few cords of wood out of the tree and I saved money on the haul off fee when I had it cut down.

I lost several during Michael, including a couple that were 150 years+ according to the arborist. I had a bunch of it milled for woodworking projects and the irregular grain is really pretty, but I also saved some for firewood and it’s crap for that. Hard to split and if you season it outdoors it tends to rot and just sorta glow in the fireplace. It’ll burn well if it’s super dry with no bark but I don’t have the space to keep a couple of cords indoors.

And ultra strong. Live oak is amazing stuff with so much cross-grain. Thsts why it can get so old and big and hold up those giant transverse limbs.. It does make it impossible to split though.

It’s what was used in Old Ironsides. I quickly learned that hand tools weren’t going to work when I made my first bowl out of it, and it went through several saw blades when I was having it milled. Hated to lose those trees but I’ll have some forever pieces that come from it once I bump up my skill level a bit.

If I have to cut it down, it's going to end up in my wood stove one way or another. So far this year, I've burned oak, willow and sycamore. If it drops leaves, it gets split and dried.

Live oak is the BEST firewood! Burns super hot and long.
