re: Light on EDC pistol

Judging by the EDC subreddit, I’m the only person in America without a light (and dot) on an EDC. A lot of people apparently conceal carry some big bulky guns. Plus at least one extra magazine.
No, I want my EDC to be as small and light as possible. When I’m out in public, a self defense situation isn’t going to be clearing houses or a dark city alley facing five gangsters. I don’t walk around in the dark at night in pitch black areas where I’d need multiple magazines and a flashlight.
A self defense situation would be defending myself against a road rager. Or a crackhead at a gas station. Just need a belly gun.

You’ve never pumped gas at night?
I would rather pack a few extra ounces and have both hands on the gun in the event I need to shoot than to try to light up someone with my EDC flashlight and shoot one handed.
I feel like the one in a million I have shoot somebody in self defense has a 50/50 chance of happening at night. My guns have lights.
Edit: If you’re going from a 23 to a 43x, you’re saving ~8oz. You could add a light and a dot and still weigh less than the stock 23.

I’ve never pumped gas at a pitch dark gas station that I need a flashlight to see someone nearby

If you're at a gas station and the need for a light on a pistol means you're going after someone. Good luck with that legally

My light is barely noticeable. In fact the only weight I notice is the slight front load because I shoot better with itinerary terms of flatter recoil.
Reality is that a EDC gun may be for a mugger. It also may be that you broke down in the ghetto with a dead phone. Might be a mass shooting in a shopping center where they cut out the lights. Might be the apocalypse. If you can fit it and it doesn't bother you, more power to you.
It doesn't make a difference on my 19x, but that's already a big gun. On my summer carry intended for light shorts and t-shirts I went without because the point was to stay small as I could. I also have the option of separate EDC flashlight. The red dot on it is nothing and target acquisition and focus is far superior for me. That will be on all my guns as funds are available.

Exactly. I never put myself in such a dangerous atmosphere. Why would I be somewhere in public that’s so dark I need a flashlight and so dangerous I need a gun? And except for the ultra scenario of a mass shooter, if I have to draw my pistol it’s going to be bc the threat is too near for me to exit the scene.
I can see how the extra weight helps with muzzle flip but I prefer to have a small lightweight comfortable EDC. I have a feeling these bulky tacticool pistols I see on Reddit don’t really get carried that much. Maybe I’m wrong.

I agree with the posters that don't have a light on the EDC.
My EDC is bare stock (except for upgraded trigger and sights). I don't want any bulk or snag points. Very utilitarian set up.
My bedside pistol and bedside 300 blk have lights and my wife's short barrel shotgun by her side of the bed has a light.

Bottom line is… There’s nothing wrong with not having a light on your EDC. And there’s nothing wrong with having a light on your EDC.
However, it’s not “bulky” or “heavy”. You’re better off getting opinions from people that have tried it both ways. I would have said the same things some of the anti-light guys have said a couple of months ago.
The only problem I found with putting a light on my EDC was finding a holster.

Light on nightstand Staccato, no light on Carry 19

Personally, no lights on EDC for the reasons you mentioned. Have flashlights in vehicles, and daily carry backpack that I can access if needed. Most if my EDC is done in the daylight so I see no reason to add weight or bulk to a pistol.
Most of my home defense weapons however have laser / light combos; Banshee in 9mm, M17, 20 gauge Turkey Thug, and Sig 556xi in 7.62x39. This is different than EDC and most likely they will be needed after dark. I’m not carrying these around and none are in holsters so the extra weight / bulk doesn’t bother me.

This entire discussion comes down to this: capability vs comfort/concealment.
If you REALLY wanted as small and light as possible, you would get a derringer .22. But for most people that tips the scale too much toward comfort and lacks capability.
You can go the other way too. I wouldn’t carry a full size 2011 with a light and a dot, because even though that gun adds a lot of capability, it’s sacrificing too much comfort and concealment.
For me, I’ll take the extra 3 oz and slide scrotum form factor for the added capability that a light brings.

My two cents, it’s like having a 4x4 truck. Might never need it, but it’s good to have if you do. My edc carries have it. They don’t add much weight . Train with and practice enough, and you’ll be good.

I have a light on my 365XL. That's what I carry 80% of the time. I have it because early mornings and late evenings I want to have it to be able to identify a threat. That can be a crackhead or a pitbull. Either way I want to be able to see when it's dark. It's that simple. I also have a G43 with no light for when I know I won't be out in the dark.

Ask your Marine veteran friend how he feels about lasers.I have Crimson Trace lasers on 3 pistols,
A lot of people don’t believe in them but I like mine.
Lasers are fine, just be able to shoot without them and don't count on them being usable outdoors. I would never hang one on a carry pistol but for a nightstand handgun they can offer some advantages depending on the user.
Honestly, one of the best uses for them is dry firing or pull/point drills.

What a crazy thread. No, your friends are idiots and don’t know what they are talking about. Buy an ar, put lights on it and it is way more effective than your edc. I literally can’t think if a reason why I would have a light on an edc, unless I was back overseas. Some of these people will call a car pistol an edc but I have a Glock 17 in my car holster and I carry a 19… different game I guess

Not if you know how to use it properly.

If the weather or location is right, I carry a 19X with an X300 on it. I carry my 43X when it makes sense. No light on that one. I'm also rarely far from a rifle with a light on it.
