Looking at a GX 460 as a daily.

I'm not doing any offroading, no hunting, but it would be towing a boat 3-4k lbs pretty regularly 20ish miles and a couple times per year of 250 miles.

Anyone with personal experience to share? Good power?

Current is a 19ft bay, but will be bumping up to something in the 22 ft range soon. Whatever it ends up being wouldn't be more than 4,000 on the very high end

Lexus GX 460 Luxury towing capacity - 6,500 pounds
Not only can it tow up to 6,500 pounds, but it can be elevated by Lexus packages like the Sport Design and Off-Road package so you can cover more ground while towing.

I have a 2016 that I got slightly used in 2016 and plan to drive it into the ground. Premium gas adds up for a full time 4x4 but I’ve been very pleased and have no regrets.

I’ve had the opportunity to tow with a 4Runner 4.0V6 (same frame/platform as the GX). It can pull the 4000 lb boat just fine. You know what can pull it better, stop better, be more stable, and do it with more luxury and comfort and better gas mileage for about the same cost as a GX? A full size Ford Expedition.

ETA: the downvotes are hilarious. Everything I said is objectively true. I guess some of you prefer riding around a glorified Toyota that has less interior room and comfort and is less capable as a hauler and towing rig and gets worse fuel mileage than an ecoboost Expedition. All my current ford products have been more reliable than my recent Toyota products with the exception of my 2002 Tundra (they don’t make them like they used to).

They are tanks. That being said tanks like fuel. Premium only for this tank. Mrs Teche averages 16 mpg in our 2017 running the kids around. 12-13 when I get to drive it pulling a 12ft trailer with a 1600lb SxS.

I have a 19ft bay boat and I tow it fine with my 4Runner.

For a 22ft I think you'd be ok. Look up specs for some hulls you like then factor weight for outboard + full tank of gas. You should be coming in around 4-5k pounds for total.

Pretty sure the GX is closer to a Land Cruiser Prado than a 4 Runner. The V-8 alone makes it the better tow option up to like 6500 or so I think. The Prado is up there with the hilux in terms of legendary bulletproof Toyotas.

The Mrs. had an '04, '11, and now a '22. Swills gas but super reliable. Sold the '11 last year with 160k miles and no telling how many hours idling in carpool lines. Never had an issue other than oil changes and occasional brake job. Engine is not a torque monster but has decent power. Have towed several trailers on vacations and it did well. Used it offroad on some trails on a Smokies vacation and it didn't even flinch.

Yes they are extremely capable. For more info, I’d suggest looking into the GXOR section in the Ih8mud forum.

I absolutely love mine.

We also have a camper that will be inching up to that max towing capacity, 5500lbs or so, and needing to do that for 4 hours at a time through the north georgia mountains -

Would you feel confident and safe about that?

This. The Prado/4R/GX is all built on the same chassis and very capable offroad and in utility roles. Keep in mind that it is a little light if you add excessive tongue weight to the hitch and the adjustable Lexus suspensions can be overloaded easily with improperly balanced loads.

While the GX/4R is a perfect for the ladies and smaller families, I'd consider something a little heavier, especially if you intend to upgrade to towing heavier loads later on. Personally, I'd look for a lightly used 100 series LC/LX "mall cruiser" and run it until the wheels fall off. Solid advice by others to browse around on the different forums on IH8MUD to research strengths and weaknesses relative to your intended uses before buying.

I don't think the towing rating of the 100 is much more than the GX. Nope--just looked. it's 6500 lbs.

I agree, I am a LC fanatic and it is a better vehicle, but the GX460 is more available and cheaper, and equal in towing capability.

I pull a 23 ft boat with a 2012 GX. Boat, fuel, motor and trailer weigh a bit under 5000 lbs. No problems getting it in or out of the water at the launch. I don’t make long hauls with the boat so can’t help there but I would do it with mine if I needed to. It’s been a very reliable car for us. Visibility for driver when towing isn’t as good as a truck but that’s only negative I have.

There is no difference in tow rating from a 1st gen GX (2002-2009) and 100 series LC/LX (2003-2007) since both have the same engine and A750F tranny combination. Where the advantage in pulling heavier loads, IMO is the 800 lb or so difference in curb weights between the two vehicles and the fact that the 100's don't have the optional KDSS.

The 2nd gen GX made KDSS standard and did away with the 5 speed "bus tranny" in favor of the 6 speed A760F. These vehicles feature a much more comparable curb weight as the 100 series with only a couple hundred lb decrease in payload capacity.

It's splitting hairs, but I own 3 different LC/LX' models and a 1 ton diesel so towing is not a problem for my utility vehicles. But if I had to tow a heavy load through hills like he suggests that he will, I'd opt for the heavier truck over a 1st gen GX. The 15% heavier chassis would inspire more confidence and stability pulling a tall, loaded camper especially should windy conditions and curvy mountain roads be encountered IMO.

Truth. I have 828k total miles split up amongst my 3 LC's/LX's. One 2006 LX about to roll over the odometer to 400k. And I wasn't easy on it in the slightest. You just cannot kill the 2UZ-FE.

Doge if you had to pick one LC year model to pick up as a secondary daily driver what would you pick?
