Looking at getting a handgun, just wondering what the baws of OT has.
Right now, I'm looking at either getting a 4 inch or a 3 inch Ruger GP100 in .357 magnum revolver(cannot decide on which to get). But I'm also looking at a semi autos as well. I'm looking at 9mm for my dad but would like a different semi auto for myself (open to suggestions).

Kind of depends on what you plan to use it for. Home defense vs concealed carry etc. Glocks are ugly but reliable in my experience.
I own 4 Ruger firearms and they have all been great

Stick out your index finger and your thumb, and curl up the other fingers. Instant hand gun.

See I'm not sure, but mostly for shooting for fun. I wouldn't mind concealed carry but for the most part I don't think I need too (but if I had a small enough gun I probably would).
I want the 4 in .357 to get the benefits of those hot loads but looking at chronograph charts, the 3 inch isn't that far behind the 4 inch, plus I really like the look of the 3 inch barrels. I do know for a fact that I want a gp 100 in .357.
Now for the semi autos, I'm open to all suggestions. A 9mm seems played out, but the ammo is cheap and would be great for targets. I would like a different caliber just because variety is the spice of life, but not sure on what caliber that should be.

I want them super dead. Also I have a 12 gauge semi auto shotgun that can take of intruders, as this would be my go to gun if I had enough time to get it. The pistol would be right by my bed as my go to in case someone makes it into my room without me waking yet.

What exactly do you mean played out? It’s the best blend of capacity and a good defensive round. It’s not the best by any stretch but it’s the best combination in my opinion
If you want something a little more exotic and in semi auto then look at a 10mm in a 1911 or a Glock.
10mm is very close ballistically to a .357mag in a semi auto.

Glock 19 would be hard to beat. If you do not have any handguns get something that’s easy to shoot easy to load and cheap to shoot. Shoot it a lot become proficient and comfortable with it then get out there and fill up a safe with other handguns.

Mostly for range use, get a 1911.
Just get a Glock 19 if you don't want a 1911 for some reason.

I have the GP100, SP101, and Redhawk and all are excellent guns. You'd love the GP100. Best part about the Ruger is that you can shoot as hot of a load as you want to. Also have the option of .38sp which is nice to have.
Ruger now makes a 7 shot GP100 that may be worth looking at.

I love wheel guns but i would go w/ semi for first handgun and the Glock 19 is a great suggestion. Very versatile. If you are dead set on a revolver, i would suggest Smith & Wesson 1980's and older used. Just like the look and triggers. SW 686, 66/19 or the 28-2 if you want a big beautiful beast. I have all three and love them. Target shooting and you are going to be reloading that 6 shooter a lot more than the Glock w/ extra mags.

For home defense I prefer a DA SA. I have a Ruger P90DC in the bedside table that I use. It's a .45 ACP, pick it up and pull the trigger, and it's got 8 + 1 so there is plenty of firepower.
If you prefer a wheel gun there is nothing wrong with that.

I own the 5 inch GP100 and use it as my hunting sidearm. It is a pleasure to shoot recoil wise. The double action trigger is a little rough at first, but with some work it is just fine.
If you are wanting this to be more of a range gun, I would recommend the 4 inch over the 3 inch. That extra inch will make a difference comfort wise when it comes to extended shooting trips.

Since you're okay with the 3" BBL, have you considered an SP101? Comes in 3", .357 and would be somewhat more concealable at the cost of 1 round (5-shot vs 6 in the GP100)?

It's difficult to respond to something like this.

Unless you have a very specific reason, 9mm is the default choice for semis. Period, full stop.

I have a P97DC 45 that I've owned since the 90s. It's been an excellent pistol.
