In a couple of my more recent bass fishing trips, I've have my hook break off my line on hook sets more than ever before. I'm 100% positive it is not the knot coming untied. Its definitely breaking off. I lost 4 hooks and tungsten weights last Sunday. My line is not old, and it was Power Pro 30lb braid, so it takes a little bit of effort to fray that line. I'm aware that the "cheaper" hooks can cut your line because the eye may be a little rigid or not finished as well as some of the more expensive hooks. I've been using the H2O brand 4/0 from Academy for more than a couple years now and have never had this be an issue up until recently. So I've decided to switch brands. I just purchased some Gamakatsu offset hooks to try out tomorrow, but I was curious what is the OB's go to brand of bass (or red fish) hooks?

The line may be slipping through where the eye meets the shank. Take a piece of braid and tie it in the eye. Then slide that knot into the gap where the eye bend meets the hook. See if that helps.

I use cheap H20 express offset shank hooks with an improved clinch knot and 12lb mono

Never remember having one break or come loose on a hookset

What kind of knot are you tying with braid?

I use gamakatsu offset round bends in various sizes and the only failures I've ever had where when I was too lazy to re-tie and the inch above the knot frayed. Have bent out more than a few 3/0s getting unsnagged on straight 12lb flouro and a trilene knot, so I have a lot of confidence in that hook/knot combo.

What knot are you using? If I'm reading you right you don't think the knot came untied but think the knot broke? Wetting the knot when cinching is easy to overlook with braid but just as important. Fray the outer fibers and it creates a weak point that will eventually fail. I have also had issues with certain braids slipping, especially new braid. You might leave a little extra tag and see if it helps. Cheap tungsten that's not well polished inside will cut braid like butter as well.

I use either a trilene knot or a palomar 99.99% of the time, but there is a lot of info out there about what knots play best with what lines. I would suspect you just happen to be using one that isn't well suited to 30lb braid and it has very little to do with the hook, but hard to say for sure.

Nah, the part going through the eye of the hook gets cut somehow

Improved clinch will slip with thinner braid, which is the only reason I learned to tie a Palomar, but honestly it could be anything.

Don’t quote me but I believe the trilene knot I tie is just an improved clinch with an extra loop through the eye that helps anchor the tag. Maybe give it a shot and see how you like it.

This is what I use and I always tie a palamor knot with braid.

Yep. Improved knot for all lines except braid. Braid gets the old palomar

With braid I do a uni knot and pass the line through the eye twice. The knot never slips on the hook eye for me.

Maybe tonight I'll catch the buzz and learn some new knots while I grill some steaks. I'll try the Uni since I plan on hooking big girl tomorrow.

I started using improved clinch long before braided line came out. All my reels have braided line (Spider Wire - usually 40-50 lb. test) on them and I still use the improved clinch knot.

The only thing I do differently with braided line is add one or two more wraps to the knot (total of 6-7 wraps).

One time, about 5 years ago I started having the line break on the hook set while fishing jigs. Was using Power Pro line. Changed back to Spider Wire - problem has never arisen again.

Look at the trilene, its actually easier than the improved clinch. I hold the hook in my palm then wrap the line around my finger where it needs to pass back through. With practice it takes 30 seconds to tie and the extra loop actually makes it easier to keep that straight.

I use the trilene knot also. I do t tie braid directly to a hook though. If I'm using fluoro leader I will usually out a drop of super glue on the knot.

Not exactly my area of expertise, as I'm usually trying 8/0-12/0 circles onto 30-50# mono or 65-100# braid...

But on my lighter tackle with smaller hooks and lighter braid, I use a snell knot and haven't had any problems.
