I whacked many a nanny fleeing a pack of Walker hounds with some 00 buckshot in my younger days. Usually would put "bear ball" in first then follow with 2 double oughts. One time my daddy gave me the green light to shoot a doe on the last day of the year. Wasn't doe day but he didn't think id see anything. When he heard the shooting and came out to my stand he found two skillet heads flopping on the ground and a blood trail of another

Pay attention to your choke, It doesn't matter what kind of animal you shoot or clay or paper or whatever.

Buckshot patterns pretty bad, The larger the shot the more open you want your choke. If it is an old 870 it probably has a fixed choke and it is either modified or full.

If it is full go with 000 or #1

If it is modified fo with 00

make sure you pattern it though this is just to get you in the ball park

put it where the neck meets the jaw

11 TIMES?!?!? At some point don't you just have to walk over there and put the deer out of its misery?

I would just like to point out that this thread discusses the use of an illegal shotgun during primitive firearms season, the misidenification of shot sizes, the shooting of three illegal does, several brush shot stories AND the shooting at a deer 11 times!

This has got to be the biggest fail of a thread ever.

I almost exclusively shoot #4 running deer with dogs. But have done some serious damage to hogs with 00 while still hunting.

If brush shooting is fun then I would be quite happy to never encounter it.

If you want to get some seriously interesting loads (different shot size combos, tailor a load to match your shotgun), look into the Ballistic Products web site and manual on reloading buckshot. I'm tinkering right now with a combo load of .500 lead ball and 9 #1 pellets in a 3" shell. Reloading shotgun shells for buckshot is not that hard and if you get a roll crimper for a drill you don't even have to have a shotgun press.

Just picked this up today. Haven't ever shot buck shot out of my 1100, so I am hoping it patterns well. Still has the original modified barrel on it

Love deer hunting with buck shot.

Killed my first 3 or 4 deer with 00 buck out of an 870, 2 3/4.

My second biggest buck (which isn't saying much - basket rack 8 inside his ears) was killed right after a big front/wind howling/just put the cigarette I was smoking in the stand out. Lord, that's been over 20 years ago, and I still have that picture of deer walking by in my head. Was pretty much black dark, I have bad eyes, and I finally shot him (my bad eyed self had to "put" horns on him. I knew it was a big bodied deer, and he was "acting" like a buck lol).

PS - I am a horrible shot with a rifle. 00 buck is a little more forgiving than all the rifles I've gone through since.

Slugs would probably be a better choice if you are still hunting.
