Best I understand, it’s the layering system that makes everyone like these brands. I’m not so much interested in buying the complete set up as I am the outerwear. I currently use a mixture of camo that I’ve acquired over the years on top of a merino wool base. I’m looking for a new outer coat. Wind/water resistant, insulated, durable. I can obviously find a coat much cheaper than one from sitka/first lite but I want to know if there’s anything I’m missing from these that make the price so high? Would the coat work as well since it’s not paired with it’s “system”? Is it all just marketing ploys/fads and there’s no difference than from other reliable brands?

You really need to just go to a store and try them on. Its a multitude of reasons for the price. They use top quality fabric, top quality everything, and then certainly there's some price point for marketing and what not thrown in. But generally speaking yes they are great.

As far as the systems go it would really depend on what you have. I can't answer that specifically.

I would generally say they are not like Yeti though and the walmart/ RTIC brands are basically the same just a lot cheaper. The top end performance wear can not be made cheaper.

I have replaced my entire system with First Lite and a couple Outdoor Research pieces. Wish I’d done it sooner.

I have the Sitka fanatic jacket and bibs. Very very warm and well designed. I also have a first lite sanctuary jacket. The sanctuary is about as warm maybe a little less, I don’t know. I’ve never been cool in either.

My complaint on the fanatic jacket is it is loud paired with my binos. The rubber on the binos and the Sitka material don’t get along.

My perfect coat would be a fanatic made with the first lite material. Both are excellent and you will not regret buying outer wear by either.

Is First Lite better then Sitka? I have read the name here a couple times, but never looked into it. I only have one piece of Sitka (bibs). I do love the quality of the brand. I just haven’t justified the high cost for other pieces.

Why exactly? What was your old system? I currently have Scentlok. Not because of the scent bullshite but because it was on sale and it’s insulated and waterproof. What improvements/features does first lite have that I can’t get from an equal brand as scentlok? Or what is it that separates it from those brands?

I have the incinerator jacket and the fanatic pants.

The incinerator is almost too much. If you tried to wear other parts of the system it would be.

I’m planning on getting another jacket at some point.

I recently got a couple pieces of Kuiu and they seem extremely nice. Only have a couple of hunts in them so far

I have first lite stuff. Mainly because I liked the camo better. The grey in the fanatic series from sitka has a really blue hue to it. Most people agree deer see vlue really well. It's made for pretty much stand hunting only.
I think first lite base layers are better and sitka gear is laid out better than first lite. I have the solitude bibs and jacket with furnace top and bottoms and lightweight top and bottoms. Really want some obsidian pants.

No one has really said WHY it’s better tho. I mean why do you/did you buy first lite over a brand like UA or Scentlok or etc?

lifetime warranty on the products in my experience. Busted stitches, send them back after season for a repair or new pair without any issues etc. fit and functionality. Creature comforts.

Staying dry
Staying warm
Being comfortable
Not stinking

The synthetics and blends I used to wear might do one or two of these decently but not all. Granted I’ve had to piece together what I’ve got now over the course of three seasons essentially because it’s expensive but outside of full proof rain gear, I have everything I could possibly need chasing whitetails in MS and TN.

I am starting to slowly buy Sitka stuff and retire my old gear.

I found the open country pattern to work well on a dove field.

They have 3 different types of fits so read their website before buying

If you are hunting in a box blind you are wasting your money.

If you are hunting in a ladder stand over a food plot in the southeast it is overkill 90% of the time. On the extra cold days, it is not going to help if you don't pair it with the proper boots.

If you are packing in a long way it is worth the money.

If you plan to hunt out west some day, it would be a good investment.

If you are buying new gear for the camo pattern, you are wasting your money. Especially in a dove field .

I got suckered into buying a SITKA garment- some 1/4 zip fleece designed to be super warm when layered. It’s a nice garment and works well for the two or three cold days we get down here. But I don’t feel it was worth the price. I don’t regret buying it, but I could get something similar- not the same- at Academy.
Sorta how I feel about the Drake coat I bought on a whim.

I’m glad you brought up KUIU, I’ve been looking at this and first lite as well. Can’t bring myself to join the Sitka gang.

The Kuiu ultra pro jacket or ultra vest and pants are probably my most used insulating layer. The pants work well under waders also. Use them with whatever outer layer you choose and you will stay warm and they are also easily packable.

Don’t really know what area you include in the southeast but I can assure you this is false in some parts of the southeast. My southeast gets pretty damn cold. But then again I may be a candy arse.
On a side note, I had a buddy from Alberta Canada hunting one of our farms this morning and he told me he almost froze his arse off. He seemed to think North Alabama 15° was colder than Alberta 15°.

It was literally the coldest it has been in 100 years for this date . Thus, 90%.
