Learn me how to drive a trailer

Been out of work for a minute and getting desperate. Got a gig cutting grass for a company while I handle some legal business. Besides backing down a boat ramp I’ve never pulled much. This would be a 12 foot box trailer. Tell me everything I need to know. I expect some ridicule.

Make wide turns
Know where you end before merging

You got that. Wide turns, take your time, dont be too proud to park down the road or in an easier spot.

Watch out for all the other idiots on the road.
Give yourself extra stopping distance between cars.
Expect to be honked at.

When backing up, straighten your wheels, grab the bottom of the steering wheel, and move your hand the direction you want your trailer to go.

When heading off the main road(s), know where a road goes (and if you can turn around) before you head down it....

You're already batting 1.000....just hop in that damn trailer crank it on up and start rolling...I'm sure you'll do fine.

Unless he's only done it turning his head and looking thru the back window. A 12 foot box trailer will require using mirrors, which, if you have only performed the preceding, will drive you nuts at first.

Best advice my father ever gave me while learning me how to pull a goose neck loaded with hay and no trailer brakes was: "Anticipate your stops."
Don't ever find yourself riding the arse of an Accord cause there ain't no way you will be able to stop as fast as them. Also start slowing down waaaaay before known stops especially on wet roads.

Good Rule of Thumb:
Make sure when you start to hook up the trailer or unhook the trailer you complete the task.
The trailer is either all the way hooked up with lights, safety chains, Brake, and receiver locked down and ready to go or it is completely unhooked and free.
A common mistake is getting distracted and forgetting to latch the receiver to the ball. Bye Bye Trailer sometimes.
And Chock your wheel if you disengage.

If the trailer fish tails, speed up. Then, slowly decrease your speed without using brakes.

Solid advice. It might be a little longer than 12. Id only be put putting around houma and the occasional ride to Amelia.

This might be obvious to you since wide turns were already discussed but when you have two lanes turning left, stay in the outside lane for this wide turn especially if turning in front of cars on the left. Not sure if that makes sense.

Wait, your trailer has a steering wheel?

First of all ya dont drive it ya tow it. Secondly left turns since you will be turning wide across one lane is usually easy. It's right turns that are tighter. ya need to make sure no traffic is coming from right to left so you can turn wide into their land then straighten out. when turning right ya need to be trailer aware watch in your mirror make sure the trailer isn't turning into trouble. be aware of curbs which are short and hard to see.

Just do like my gf does....run it into everything. The trailer will eventually get the hint

12' trailer won't require too wide of turns, its when it gets to about 18-20+ that get to be a little wide. You're already a step ahead of most folks just by asking, and you are smart by coming to the OB and getting a full page of great advice instead of the OT where they would have ripped you a new one for having legal trouble and not being able to "drive a trailer" like a baw from South Louisiana should.

Extend/flip your mirrors. Adjust them so you can just see the sides of the trailer.
