I’ll be building me a “roost” habitat if this goes thru. They’re dumb but eat good. You hear em then see em. How’s it always worked for me.

I had a nesting pair show up near my house about 4 years ago and I would watch them fly down and eat corn every afternoon at my corn feeder behind my house. Well, evidently they are Democrats because more showed up the next year, and even more showed up the year after that to eat the free corn I feed all year long. I say shoot dem bastards.

I’ve gone the same route. From one pair, to dozens upon dozens. They come clean up under my bird feeders so I don’t mind that. They are like cartoon ducks to me, perched on the spikes on my wrought iron fence, and when in the backyard, constantly popping up in the air, looks like popcorn popping.

interesting. the ones that I have shot all had large diameter breasts, but they were thin.
they had leg meat for days. perfect gumbo meat.

Being from the Midwest I’d had never seen hardly any of those until my wife relocated here.
I’m blown away with how many there are down here and how quickly they multiply, they may be the dumbest waterfowl in the history of waterfowl though.
One of the guys I guide in Canada took me to Venice last season and we shot like 18 of those bastards, they eat incredibly good.

But can we shoot them within the city limits?
Could get a limit without leaving the house! Neighbors might not like me shooting over their rooftops though.

Definitely should apply to both species
Hard to tell difference early in the morning

Like shooting chickens. Once they get in the spread, they ain’t getting out.
And agree that they eat well.
Years ago, I had 3 successive groups of 9+ birds assault the blind in Mexico. No plugs and lead..it did not end well for the chickens.

Good. We have them here in the Florida panhandle. The only ducks I get to shoot are woodies. I’m going to shoot the Mexican Whistlers legal or not. They are slowly taking over. We should put up nets in Mexico to keep them out.

They're basically local and don't migrate. So I wonder if you wanted to design a piece of property for them, what would you do? Like a rolling pasture with a series of cattle ponds in it. And intersperse it with patches of corn and milo and millet or something like that? Then put up about 100 nesting boxes? You would probably have a good combination of Whisting Ducks, resident Canadas, and dove.
Might be a cool experiment??

Might actually be able to get a limit of ducks now

The next few years could be interesting. Last year was the first time I saw them around here. If they provide opportunities people will try to attract them. Especially in non fly way areas.

my belief (NOT a suggestion) is that if you are going to do something illegal, do it quietly.

Pretty sure they migrate in the winter to Mexico or just stay down on the coast or at least some of them do because they have a lot less in Dec/Jan but in the spring - fall its crazy how many we have in south LA

They fly over my house every night. Blast em.

i hope this happens, last year could have killed a limit everyday, they are excellent eating as well

Banding and telemetry has told us they actually don't migrate south to Mexico, etc. in winter at all.
They are still insanely prevalent in the marshes south of Lake Arthur during the regular season and a ton are harvested. But yes, they do leave a lot of other marshes in favor of.........rail yards in New Orleans (seriously), and grain elevators along the Miss River. You'll see them in teal season then they are largely absent come November.
Heads up, framework is telling us next teal season could/should be but 9 days due to the recent count on BW teal.
