You should paint a tire white, throw it over the mail box and plant you some marigolds in that bitch.
The mail boxes are probably in the right-of-way and the home owner whose land is adjacent to the right of way is responsible for maintaining that property. He's a dick.

Go round up around it....bet he catches the hint

Update: he cut his yard yesterday, still hasn’t cut around my mailbox. I just walked outside to get my mail as he was pulling out of his driveway and waved at him in hopes he’d come by and talk to me about the mailbox, but he just waved back and drove off. This guy sucks.

Yeah, that's pretty bad. I'd probably hit it with some roundup or diesel.

Just go talk to him. He may not want to weed eat around it for fear of damage and pissing you off.
He could be a dick and just refuse but you’ll never know if you don’t communicate.

Wow, this dude edges that much but allows that in his yard. I’m thinking you’ve got a psycho on your hands.

Spray it with Round up and let him enjoy the dead spot around your mail box.
Problem solved.

Do you know your neighbor? If not, you need to go introduce yourself and get to know him. That's how to be the bigger person. Nine times out of ten, that will fix most awkward situations.
Use the opportunity to discuss the mailbox situation. Explain to him that you feel bad about cutting around it when you mow your grass because it will make his yard look bad and vice versa. By the end of the conversation you will know where he stands. Either he's a dick or he just didn't feel comfortable mowing around your box. Or like someone said, he's a psycho. You need to know if that's the case.
Bottom line, taking any action (like using Round Up) in the blind could be a huge mistake that makes for bad blood between neighbors. It's not worth it.

While I completely agree with the OP that it wouldn't hurt a thing for the neighbor to catch it when he's weedeating. I would if I was his neighbor. But by this point I say just cut your own grass and be done with it. No way I'm letting something this little bother me enough to have to post about it or even ponder on it past the point of just deciding to cut it myself. The fact the neighbor has let it grow to the point it has shows that he has zero fricks to give when it comes to trimming around your box

Probably true, but one thing I've noticed is that more and more people seem to not know how to handle situations like this. They've grown up more isolated than previous generations, who all knew and associated with their neighbors. Now people tend to avoid their neighbors and end up doing odd things like this because they just don't know how to handle it.
If OP doesn't want to approach his neighbor, then I agree with you 100%. Cut it yourself and move on.

If you look you will see he cut the spot of grass between the mailbox and curb with a trimmer, but couldn't take 5 seconds to trim around the mailbox ? that dude is a huge tool i'd leave it as is and say nothing and go on with your life,he is the one that's losing sleep over it not you.

Just relax man. Let it grow and stop worrying about it. If he's OK with leaving that eyesore in his yard why aren't you? It's his yard, let him do what he wants with it. He may eventually even trim it, but if not, so what?
He sure seems to have you agitated. Taking pictures of it and posting it on the net!!?? Come on man, Chill.

Make cutting around the mailbox your new midnight ritual.
Posted on 7/7/18 at 12:26 pm to JTM72
Maybe in the past he cut around a person’s mailbox and damaged it or the mailbox owner complained. At the end of the day it is not hard to cut around the mailbox.

Not reading all this but why don’t you just walkover and weedeat it? Why is this a question?

I would wait to see how tall that grass would grow. Perhaps even add some fertilizer
