Anybody know the actual law on this? Say a spined deer that is paralyzed. I know there is the option to cut its throat. But is it legal to finish it with a .22 or pistol?
Edit: Louisiana

Just stab him in the lungs and wait 2 min.

Also, illegal to shoot him with a rim fire anytime. Illegal to shoot him with any firearm after legal shooting hours.

I would do what I needed to to finish the deer. It would take a real a-hole game warden to hit you for that as long as you were honest

Lol. Go ahead and take your chances on that.

So, take a chance on getting kicked or stabbed by the deer?

I really don’t understand why the prohibition against carrying a .22 pistol.

It would be illegal to stab a deer or cut its throat after dark also.

Really we are talking about quickly dispatching an injured/ dying animals life. Would need to refer to local rules and authorities.

I was under the impression that you can carry one.
You just can’t shoot the deer with it.

He’d thank you for your honesty and add on another ticket for harassment cause you used a flashlight while shooting.

Honestly , if you called the local warden and told him you are standing there waiting for your deer to die and you ask for permission to dispatch it. He would probably grant you permission.

Well that kind of defeats the whole purpose of having it with you, doesn’t it?

I’d like to know the reasoning behind it. Only a moron would use a .22 pistol as a primary weapon to take deer.

Everything is legal if you don’t get caught

I believe it’s more appropriate to say:
“You aren’t breaking the law if you don’t get caught”

The law doesn’t distinguish between a .22 pistol, rifle, or anything else. The intent is to not have people shoot deer with anything after dark and then claim they were just recovering.

If you had to put money on it, you think a deer has never been spotlighted with a .22 pistol?

I would have no problem or hesitation reducing a wounded animal after shooting hours with a .22…….. if I am wrong and caught I would take plenty of pictures of the non lethal wound and have my day in court, but also remember

If you want justice , go to a whore house, you want to get phucked go to a court house

By the book, its illegal.

I'd do it anyway. One shot after dark, deer obviously has two holes in it. Ill take my chances with that before watching an animal suffer.

Same thing if I hit one with my truck or come up on a vehicle /deer collision, if the animal is suffering I will reduce by any means available (.45 to the head) and not think twice about it, if I end up getting fined etc, so be it

Don’t be a pussy. You are the one who made a less than great shot. Deal with it.

I saw my brother and my dog try to drown a crippled deer once. Do not recommend. Shoot it.
