Large block ice molds or other ideas?

I just upgraded chest freezer size so I have more space. I’d like to have 100 lbs or so of large block ice I can make for offshore trips. I see there are 5 lb silicone molds on Amazon for about $5 each. I was originally going to do something like 1/2 milk jugs but this would be easier?

Any suggestions? The idea is the large ice blocks last longer and then can supplement with 100 lbs of regular ice. I will need much less ice and also it should last a lot longer?

I just bought two silicone molds off Temu for about 10 bucks. The blocks they make are about 8 lbs. I like them. I keep 4 of them stacked in the freezer.

A couple of weeks ago I put 4 of them in a 65 qt chest with a quartered doe. There was still plenty of ice 3 days later.

ETA: put them in a milk crate unless you're putting them on a bottom rack. It hurts a little bit when they fall out and hit your foot.

no, its better to switch over to the 1/2 gallon jugs

the 2 ltr bottles roll around and i find the shape doesnt transfer the cold as well as a flatter surface like the 1/2 gallon jugs

I use 5 gallon buckets. I put about 4 gallons of water per bucket. Turn the bucket upside down and run water over it. A 40# block of 0 degrees ice will fall out. Won’t melt for days. Your ice is colder than you will get anywhere.

4 or 5 buckets in a very large box after a few days the fish slime and water was so cold you couldn’t keep your hands in it.

If you decide to break it with an ice pick don’t use the ice pick in your ice chest. It’s only a matter of time before you stick your box no matter how careful you are.

I plan on getting some of those 4 or 8 pound trays though.

My issue with this is I’d like to use it for bait, fish, etc so it’s going to get nasty. I could clean them and rinse off. But ice that just melts away and I reuse seems easier?

I have a zillion Sam’s and Costco Greek yogurt cups, they are high protein, reusable, and make a nice ~ 3 pounder.

What ever happened to using dry ice

We used to do four day river trips with a smidge of dry ice in the sealed coolers. They kept the unused ice perfect.

I use square 1-gallon ice cream buckets (I guess technically they are cubes). Can stack easy and a better use of space than round ones.

I use large Tupperware and a 3 gallon metal pot. Make blocks from 3-20 lb. Summer weekend at the camp downriver is brutal on cube ice. Without blocks,we couldn't keep fish cold on a full 3 day trip.

line the bottom of cooler with cooler shocks. Stock up on 8 lb molds and put them in a target bag for freezer storage and freeze as many as posssible.

I imagine dry ice + ice + yeti styled cooler = bomb.

Apple juice bottles are rectangular and work well. I have a kid so they are easy to come by.

Nothing wrong with dry ice but dry ice freezes everything mostly solid and its just one more thing to buy to go fishing. I don't want it solid, I just want it to last longer than cubed ice on a hot boat the summer.

ETA: Some great ideas already thank you everyone

How do you test the temperature of the ice to know it’s Zero.

Find an older person who gets meds in the mail. They have tons of reusable ice packs. Free to good people.

That's a good idea.

Yeah but a lot of that stuff gets brittle at 0* that a deep freezer is kept. I'd be fine spending $50 on silicone if it lasts and is easily reusable. I'll supplement it with some containers for sure though
