We had one come up to our camp in the Ouachita National Forest north of Albert Pike. We had seen it crossing the road to the south earlier that day riding four wheelers. It screamed and I almost shite myself. It was between us and the creek which mean less than twenty yards. We were basically in its way through this canyon and it screamed to call us assholes.

Every hair on my body went rigid.

That would mean a female and AGFC says no evidence of a breeding population. I'm no mountain lion expert but I've never heard any recordings of male mountain lions that sounded like what we heard.

There’s a breeding population next door in Oklahoma. So chances are, it’s happening in Arkansas as well. The first sighting of a mom and kittens were in Cimarron County…no big deal…that’s the western most county in Oklahoma…Late last year, another sighting of a mom and kittens were in Osage County…that’s big deer country and is just north of the Tulsa metro.

There have also been females found killed in Oklahoma as well.

The AGFC have always been weird about mountain lions, for whatever reason. Oklahoma is pretty open about it all.

Ive seen a smaller female in Florien LA around 08-09. The LAWFD says there are no breeding pairs in LA. I strongly disagree with that statement.

They're the very definition of native, being pushed out of their historic range doesn't change that.

The same photo is floating around the internet saying it was hit on hwy 24 in Woodville? Tomorrow it’ll be in front of Tony’s on Plank Road.

Yeah I'm in a few mountain lion/wildlife groups on FB and folks are sharing these as proof that they've seen 27 of them between the Dollar General and gas station in Meadville.

1.) Assume this was a male?

2.) How far are males traveling from female poon? That's damn near in the middle of the state. Texarkana is 78 miles away...you are telling me these males are traveling 100s of miles?...Maybe, but IDK. ...

3.) I guess it makes sense if no one is getting young cats or clearly a female on trail cam its a "traveling male", but again see above.

ETA: I would assume a "traveling male" would be a younger cat? Would a 160lber not be a very mature male and more than capable of holding a territory? Or do they all travel?

Search "how far do male cougars travel?" It's pretty interesting.

Yes, the one that was caught on cam in TN a few years ago had crossed a couple of states if I remember correctly.

I think there was a cat killed in Arkansas or Missouri a while back and they traced it back to the Black Hills in South Dakota

"Mountain lions usually travel within home ranges of 30 to 125 square miles"

This is what I found? To get into Arkansas from Texas is a 70+ mile walk. That's a range of 5,000 miles. Very different from the above.

ETA: There are numerous stories of Mountain Lions traveling across the country. But that doesn't convince me this is normal, more likely the outliers.

Its hard to believe that every mountain lion that's traveled through the south is just "passing through" from 500 miles away. None of them are staying? Come on.

Sure. But I'm also realistic. Why would all these mountain lions only travel through, and none of them actually stay?

Went down a rabbit hole on panthers in east TX / SE La a few years ago.

Dude from east Texas writes this book and compiles the history of it and accounts of sightings from all over north America.

A couple of interesting points that I recall from it.

Spanish explorers / settlers from the time of El Camino Real de los Tejas recorded sightings of black panthers. Also the account in the Galveston Daily News from the late 1800s or early 1900s where some folks near Lumberton killed a black panther.

In any event the guy did a good job with this book. Highly recommend. Would like to see the guy on the Rogan show at some point.
