He went in for a rotate and balance yes but technician recommended it because of safety concern so it is in play.

That being said.... we are talking near bald tires vs brand new tires in all of these demonstrations.

This is my point. People have been doing it wrong for forever. I'm one of the worst offenders on rotation. I've never had it happen to me.

I have a truck with 12K on it. I should just go ahead and put the rear tires on the front and buy new for the rear if I follow this.

Measure the tread on your tire then. I've seen even at 15K tires wear pretty evenly. Not often but at times yes. If your tread on the front is half of the rear sucks for you just leave them where they are. If only 1-2 32nd's difference, rotate them and keep on going. What I'm seeing is this is getting pushed pretty hard and some tech's take it to the extreme where if the tread is barely off they say nope no rotation. Kind of idiotic to me but whatever shop rules are goes.

The issue I have for this is front wheel drive. Tires nearing end of life vs good condition, would I rather peel out in rain on the aging tires on the front or not and put the better ones on the front?

I will take not peeling out for $500

I honestly came in here believing you should always put fresh tires on the front since that's what rotating does. But after reading the sources Clames posted (very good info) the purpose of rotation is to even tire wear since you will get more wear on front tires. The small discrepancy in tread depth does little to affect traction unless the intervals have been uneven.

And Clames's articles also changed my mind when seeing this:

Bad tires in front -> understeer (which is easy to correct)

Bad tires in rear -> oversteer (which is more difficult to correct and can lead to spinning out)

Thanks Clames for bringing in esteemed sources to empirically prove me wrong. I came in wanting to downvote everyone who said bad tires on front but was surprised to see the data disagreed with me.

Cmon now man. You know 97% of all tire scientists believe in it.

"Best tire, where" should never be a question. If a tire is suspect, change it.

I do a 5-tire Rotation on my Jeep. I'll never just buy 2. I'll buy 4 at once and the next rotation buy another.

The funny extension of this is, never mix in new tires or rotate at all. Just keep buying new tires, 2 at a time

I guess at some point the rears would fall apart, but still have 8/32 of tread on them.

From Top Gear, “understeer works like this, you drive down the road, you turn the wheel but the car goes straight on, crashes into a tree, and you die. Over steer works like this, you drive down the same bit of road, turn the wheel, but the back of the car comes around like this, and you go off the road, crash into a tree and you die. Now, oversteer is best because you don’t see the tree that kills you!”

The point being missed here is that you will at least have some good feedback to make corrective action with. Tires peel out? Modulate gas pedal. Front tires lose grip up front? Steering feedback will let you know so you can correct. With FWD the rear tires are essentially dead unlike in a RWD where you'll get feedback with the RPMs changing suddenly.
