Quartering to you is almost a no go everytime when bow hunting. The kill spot depending on the angle is around 1-2". You sure you hit him up front? If it was slightly back you may have clipped guts and they filled your holes which would explain little blood as well.

Reason I’m thinking shoulder and not gut is no pass through. I gut shot on out that stand 2 years ago and had pass through. That and the impact was loud

Sucks man, but don’t be too hard on yourself it happens. All of he arm chair QBs will be here to tell you how you messed up but you know what happened. You got dogs on it quickly and worked late trying to find him. Hope it turns around quickly this morning.

I don't know what kind of thickets we're talking about but if you can get ahold of a drone sometimes they can be helpful.

Unfortunate part of bow hunting. Bow hunting can humble the best of us. Best of luck finding him.

I really wonder why more people don’t consider handgun hunting over bow. Offers almost the same ‘closeness’ challenge with maybe more surety on the kill.

Good luck OP I was in a your spot a few years ago when I got cute with a rifle shot and ended up losing the deer. Still sick about it

Yes?

Most of the bowhunters I know cite the need to have a deer up close as their main reason for doing it. A handgun requires the deer to be almost as close for a clean, humane shot, particularly if one is using iron sights.

On the other hand I am a firearm enthusiast, and many hunters are not.

Do you know the weight of the arrow? Or GPI and how long it is? If it’s a lighter setup, you might not have gotten good enough penetration. I’m assuming it’s the 3 blade variety muzzy?

Started walking the woods at daylight. Around 11:30 I figured I covered everything.

The deer ran through CRP the direction he came from when I shot. This is the opposite direction the dogs went. I figured maybe when I lost sight the deer made a hard right and went towards the woods. Anyway, decided to ride the field hoping to at least find my arrow and there he was. Shot high. Maybe double lung but only 100 yards from the stand.

Awesome buck FTF and kudos for continuing the search.

It sucks losing the meat, but at least you recovered him.

Thanks y’all. I’m happy to know my shot wasn’t that far off. He weighed 195 and scored 127. My first P&Y buck so I’m pretty happy. More than anything I was able to take a mature buck with a bow.
