That is only a no-no if the fish it torqued up from vertical. Otherwise, it's not a damaging thing to do.

I've heard claims that holding a fish vertically will also do damage. But it doesn't. As my dad always told me "don't make his tongue pop out."

My favorite thing about this fish is that it is a native of toledo bend and not a Florida largemouth that they brought in to repopulate the lake

This is absolutely not true.
