Anyone have any tips? Jr and i wanted to set some yoyo's but the water is already too far from the shoreline to use some trees. I want to make a few jug lines and throw them from the bank to see if we can catch any catfish, but i will tie the jugs to a tree on land since we will be doing this from the shore. I was planning to use chicken livers 2-3 deep. Any tips and or suggestions would be appreciated.

Should work fine as long as you have a weight under the hook. Otherwise, the current will drift your jug to the bank.

chicken livers aren't tough enough to stay hooked on jugs...

I like lightly browned hot dogs marinated in a lot of garlic power.

Gizzards will stay on much better. Or yes, hotdogs always do the trick.

I haven’t personally done any jug fishing but I’ll relate what a guy told me.He showed me his rigs,He used 20 oz Dr.Pepper bottles painted on inside with fluorescent orange paint,he liked his lines 32 in.He said that was his favorite bottle, worked better than noodles or big jugs. His favorite baits were cut bait, brown shrimp and chicken livers.
I’m not sure why that size bottle would work the best but that is what he said.
He had multiple pictures on his phone of big piles of catfish he had caught.
I want to get into jug fishing eventually but I’m going to experiment with noodles, gal jugs to see if there is really any difference.

We used ivory soap. Cut some off and wad it around the hook. As a bonus every time you catch one and re bait you can clean your hands

I started setting jug lines last year for the first time. I've been setting set lines for years, but always had live bait. We used mostly cut bait last year and some of the catfish bait you can get at academy. Honestly, havent had much luck with either. But its probably mostly because we werent leaving them in long enough. We would catch 2 or 3 here or there, but never hammered them. our trips were usually only a few hours, as it was just an excuse to get out of the house for a little while, and get in the boat.

This. The only way to use liver as bait is to make liver bait balls using old stockings. Tie a knot in one end of a piece of stocking, load it up with liver and tie the other end to make a ball about the size of a ping pong ball. Hook through the stocking and the liver stays put.

Here's a video a friend sent me a while back on using wide mouth bottles (gatorade or powerade) and putting the hook and weight in bottle to keep from tangling up. They have worked well for us.

Buy a beef heart and cube it. Works great. Duck guts are awesome too!

If you’re going to use chicken livers stuff them in a piece of pantyhose or something that will hold it together.

I’m going to try that. Thanks.

I also have a barrel of rotten cheese that I use for my catfish traps. Soaking them in there couldn’t hurt.

We have been fishing the backwaters mis day turkey hunting the last several weeks. Hot dogs cut up into pieces mixed with dried cherry jello mix have been the ticket. Did very well last three weeks with yo yos and noodle jug lines.

I have been setting jugs out into the intercoastal for years around Jan 15 to April 1st with live perch and circle hooks without any weight. I would find all jugs (big difference apart) but all would have catfish on them. Because of my success, I have never tried them with weights or artificial bait.

My buddy jugs with weights and he doesn’t catch equal to or more than me. I just don’t believe weight does much. My two cents

My jugs are made of 1” pipe slide in middle of 12” noddle with two cemented end caps and one cap with a eye hook secured to it.

my jugs are also weightless with good success.

Usually use cut bait and catch primarily blue cats.

You have to be careful with that advice. Some states consider bluegill a gamefish, and it is illegal to use them for bait.
