My lab is with the trainer for a tune up and more work on blind retrieves. Last weekend, I went to check her out and work her with the trainer. Made me have "the want" for opening day.

Do you guys dike & flood it intentionally or does it just flood when it rains?

We just cleared it and stopped up a ditch that runs back to the creek. I have a 6 inch pipe buried in the top 1/3 of the levy to relieve some pressure when it rains, but I suspect it could blow out with a huge turd floater rain. As it is, you can open the ditch up with a shovel pretty easy to drain it.
This is all temporary, as it's still a new project. I'd like to get a riser/drain pipe set up in it eventually but they are pretty expensive.

That's awesome. I've looked at buying some land and a lot of places have little creeks but no land that's currently flooded. I was wondering if it was possible to dam up a ditch to flood an area, and how much work it was. This is good to hear.
Two more questions:
Did you need any heavy equipment to build up the dam/levee?Did it hold any ducks this year?

I had it cleared by a guy with a big Volvo excavator. Once he was done he dug like 2 scoops and stopped up the ditch. It's only like 5 foot wide. We smoothed and even it all out with shovels and buried the relief pipe in it.

Yeah, I jumped a few wood ducks out of it already. A wood duck hole we can hit a couple times a year is all it will be. I don't really expect to slaughter mallards in it week in week out.

I paid the excavator operator $100/hr. and he got it cleaned out in a couple 8 hour days. About the cost of a lease somewhere for a year.

Its very hard to get property and have ducks come to it if they are not already. You build it and they will come works for deer, in my experience not so much for ducks. Seen multiple times a pristine duck property barely kill year in and year out while another a mile or less as the crow flys absolutely slaughters them. When it comes down to it you have to be where the ducks want to be.

i agree with this, but i would think that a new property in the right location would begin to attract ducks... but the local flyways and feeding/resting locations should determine what is or isn't in the right spot. you're far more experienced than i am though, so idk.
that's discouraging because i'd like to buy some property and do exactly what 34 described. my intent would be to hunt it once every couple weeks though, not every weekend. i just want an easy place to take my dad and the younguns so they don't have to do the shitty parts of pub land hunting.

definitely agree with this. in venice last season we hunted an hour in one spot, killed 1 duck. We picked up and moved <100yds away and limited in an hour and a half.

Correct, finding those spots are the trick and quite the challenge. Not trying to discourage you, I myself am will be looking for land in the future with the hopes of doing the same thing. Just putting it out there the realistic expectations and hurdles.

Just finished the mottled duck survey across coastal Louisiana. We saw LOTS of bluewings, gadwalls, shovelers,and scaup ...... but not many mottled ducks.

The whooper crane fantasy factory out at WLCA is eating up all the suitable mottled duck habitat. Look for the number of posts next season claiming to have shot a "black duck" to decrease in proportion to the mottled duck population. We must act now
