Now hear my plan before you go all negative Nancy on me. I came up with this plan last night after pulling some Nerf gun parts i made for my son off my 3D printer.

I figure if I submit my Form 1 next week I have 9 months give or take to plan and design my own suppressor. I've never designed a suppressor before, but I have all the technical engineering skills and tools to do the design work. I can do all of the 3D modeling. I can run the fluid flow solution with CFD software and export the CFD to FEA for stress analysis. The end game will be to design and make a suppressor that will hold up to rimfire use that I can manufactured out of ABS or PETG plastic on a 3D printer.

I'm positive I can make it strong enough to take the physical abuse. If I make it a monolithic design in one piece you would never be able to take it apart to clean it. I don't know how long it would take for this to be an issue but I imagine that will limit it's life unless I can find safe lead solvents to clean it out that won't damage the plastic I choose. The final thing I'm not 100% sure on is if a suppressor as an NFA item fall under the 1988 undetectable firearms act.

Thoughts? Especially with respect to legalities. Don't want to inadvertently commit a federal offense.

ABS

Won’t last. The heat and gases will eat that thing up with the quickness. There isn’t a ton of data out there on what is happening inside a can but what is available indicates it is a damn hostile environment. Let me put it another way, if it was possible to make a plastic can don’t you think someone would have done it by now?

I may be wrong because I don’t remember completely but I think you need the dimensions when you submit.

Even on a rimfire, I dont see the ABS holding up to the pressure. I am definitely not an engineer though.

Since you have access to everything, I think it would be a cool process and fun project.

Make sure if its a rimfire can, that you design it so it can be taken down and cleaned. I think this would be a must. Id hate to invest this much time and nto be able to get full use out of the item.

ETA: Id probably call the ATF with any specifics, they will give you the correct information and then you'll have their official correspondence in case any issues ever arise.

I bet if you wrapped the PVC in duck tape it would have held.

My buddy, who is very handy/crafty/imaginative, built his own. He ended up buying one the legal way afterwards because the performance was not as he expected.

On the Form 1, you only need to state the caliber and overall length of the suppressor you intend to build.

I'd heard the 2 liter bottle as a suppressor story 30 years ago. It might have been mentioned in a Tom Clancy novel. At that time, it worked pretty well.

I have no idea how much 2 liter bottles have changed over the years. I don't know if a different type plastic is being used. I do believe they are quite a bit thinner than they were in the mid/late '80s. No clue how that would affect performance.

After doing a little more research there are some people who have made ABS 3D printed suppressor.

I don't think tensile strength will be an issue. I can design stress issues out of the suppressor pretty easy I do that all the time in my job. Heat could be an issue. It would be more suited for my squirrel rifle not for my plinking 22lr AR or 10/22.
