That bear looks super healthy. This in LA? Population is booming, time for a lottery season.

Man I've still yet to see one in the woods. But of course there have been many times I saw a "hog" far off and maybe it was a bear and I just didn't know it.

Cool. Past time for a season on the Bears. Here’s one of many Madison Parish bears.

That's a pretty stout black bear. Did one of the posts on that photo think you actually lived in your blind?

Cool video.

I once had an owl soar up and land basically on my climber right at dark one night. I almost died.

What’s the temperament of those bears?

I see bears often in Madison Parish and have never had an aggressive encounter with one. I know there can be a first time for everything, but they usually just amble off if they realize you’re around.

That's incredible. Love the way they are able to smell you all the way to your stand. Can't imagine what their life ( or a deer for that matter) is like with a nose like that.

I don’t understand why we don’t have some type of limited opportunities for bear. Is there any serious talk about it? Arkansas and Oklahoma have seasons. Not sure about MS.

They say they’re recovered and have been de-listed from endangered. The problem is they want interconnection between the three main populations. The southernmost population is practically cut off from the rest. The southern population is also transplants from Minnesota and are not “Louisiana Black Bears” so not sure why it matters.
The main reason is that those who oppose a hunt are anti hunters. Last fall, I had 8 sightings of different bears over a 26 hour period in Madison Parish. We have a much higher density than many places who allow a hunt.

When I had a student job in the wildlife division for LDWF there was talk going on about starting a lottery hunt for bears similar to the alligator lottery hunt. I even mailed out surveys to individuals asking their opinion on a black bear lottery hunt system. This was 3 years ago, so I've been expecting them to do something every year now.
