i hate how on my boat the rod holder and gas cap are right next to each other. both are stainless steel. ive done it once before. remove the cap to the gas tank, then turn around to grab the pump, turn back around and now you are looking at nearly two identical stainless steel holes.

multiple times ive put the nozzle in the rod holder and caught myself before pumping. once I did not. it sucked big time.

On my 1996 Yamaha it’s easy to do if you aren’t paying attention and have never filled it up before

I once put antifreeze in the windshield washer reservoir of a girlfriend's car. Ended up siphoning almost all of it out but still felt like an idiot.

Probably Tank is vented back through the fill neck so it pressures up and clicks the nozzle off. Try putting the nozzle in just enough to get all the gas going down the hose with a gap around it.
This may sound odd but it works:
Rotate the nozzle 180 degrees when you stick it into the fuel fill hole (so that the "squeeze lever" is pointing away from you).

I still can't fill mine at "wide open" rate, but it eliminates about 95% of the nozzle shutting itself off. You'll still want to avoid jamming the nozzle all the way into the filler hole - air does have to makes its way past the gasoline nozzle.

I much prefer the old style fillers with the separate vent next to the fuel fill hole.

That happened to a guy filling up a boat on a Saturday morning at Campo’s about a month or so ago. Robert and FJ were PISSED b/c all that fuel ended up in the water... and the bait tanks were in the water. They ended up giving all the shrimp away that morning b/c they were all going to die anyway.

Ocean Isle NC had a bad one not long ago
same thing.....guy put gas in rod holder and someone suggested disconnecting the battery....that was the actual spark that ignited the gas.

brutal burns for the victims.

Yeah seen it at state oil in belle chase one time. I pulled up and was half way done with filling it when the cheevos realized they had pumped gas in the rod holder. I immediately quit pumping and rolled out the most nervous 25sec of my life wondering what was going to spark that bomb off!!!

There is one on YouTube which I can’t find, boat is in the water moored to a dock, the guy is also filling the rod holder when something sets off the gas. There is a huge fireball, the top cap of the boat is blown off the hull, when it returns to earth it narrowly missed the guy on the dock.

Buddy of mine told me similar story. Said two guys standing beside truck talking while gassing up the boat, until the bilge pump kicked on...

We had a sailor put diesel in the DEF tank of an MTVR. Not good. Needless to say, the truck didn't complete the convoy.
