Doc, I am so sorry. Look into a British Lab. They are typically a little smaller, a little calmer, and a not as hard headed.
Can't go wrong with a British lab. I have a 1.5 year old male that is 60 lbs except he's as hard headed as they come.
Sorry for your loss.

I've got a Topbrass golden. She's great. She hunts really hard, and honestly, she's too smart for her own good. She was really biddable, but the thinking for herself thing made more advanced training a frustrating process for both of us. She hardly sheds at all, but she gets fish oil with her food every day. You really can't beat a golden's temperament. She's friendly and loving to the point where it's annoying sometimes, but when she hunts it's 100% business. I've hunted over various "different" dog breeds, like boykins and pointers. All good breeds. I'm just a lab/golden person so I can't really see myself ever venturing away from that.
I'm really sorry for your loss man. Keep your head up. I think it's much harder on those few of us who really understand what its like to have a working relationship and bond with a retriever.

I'd agree with the poodle statements.

Link doesn't work for me. What is it?

I've had and trained many labs ,Drahthaars and German Shorthairs - all great dogs - my next will be a shorthair(takes care of sheding problem) dont get pick of litter ,too hard headed- a calm gsp or gwp will have more energy than most any other dog- easy to train if you spend 20 mins a day and keep them occupied

With another chocolate IMHO....

It's a Neato robotic vacuum. I used to have an older first generation robot vacuum that my wifes grandparents gave us (used) that sucked. This one does an awesome job of covering the whole room and will return to it's base and charge itself (most of the time). All you have to do is turn the thing on and empty the box when it's done (which is very fast and easy). It picks up an insane amount of shite.
I had been campaigning with the wife to make the dogs outside dogs (which comes with its own headaches since they're labs and like to dig out of the yard) but now idgaf because the floors in the house actually stay clean.

Goldendoodle...

Big enough to handle a goose and no shedding.

Do you own a "goldendoodle" or have you hunted over one (or more than one)?
For that matter, how many that have suggested any "breed" with the poodle in it have owned one or hunted over a handful? I'm interested to know if people are suggesting them based off what they infer about dogs or have real life experience with them, or feel like they just want something different than everyone else

Yes.

No.
Just saying it's pretty nice breed in that they don't shed.
Don't like the fact that your lab or golden will shed like crazy all over your house but still want all of the positive attributes? Mix it with a poodle.

Hunted w labs, lab derivatives and a labor doodle. I have a labor doodle now and she is great. She seems to be very intelligent and very chill compared to what I have had previously and is my favorite dog. Super sweet, tenacious when retrieving and very strong but less dense than a lab. She is an F1 so she sheds but not as bad as a lab and does not have the same oily coat. It is my understanding the F2's do not shed as they have the true poodle curls va the wiry F1 hair. She has never torn anything up except the occasional candy bar or yogurt container. Go check one out at a breeder.

Can your Boykin retrieve a Canada goose?
Can it? Yes, but it'll probably be dragging it. If you hunt geese with any regularity, boykins aren't the best choice and this is coming from someone who owns and hunts with a boykin and who has convinced many people to get one. I LOVE my boykin, but a mature greater Canada goose is probably half her weight.

Does yours bark nonstop when outside?

Easy question.
Answer: Lab

No. She rarely barks when outside unless she is playing with/chasing my other dog or if she can see a squirrel. She usually just chills. In fact she is very quiet in general.
My labkin on the other hand... that dude makes the WEIRDEST groans, whines, etc... I've ever heard. He is a very vocal dog but doesn't bark too much just makes other noises.

I would love to have a Boykin one day.

I would also go back with a Lab.
I run All Age Field Trials with my Labs and keep up with future litters.
If you're interested, my buddy just bred his FC x GRHRCH bitch (Master passes) to a FC and is expecting pups around New Years in Baton Rouge. I'm taking first male pick. Should be an excellent litter of chocolate factored blacks.
They'll probably be about $1,200, which might seem a bit steep, but the potential for a great dog is there. I long ago gave up trying to make chicken salad out of chicken feathers.

Just got a new chocolate female. I forgot why I had any other kind of dog.
