More ducks are generally killed earlier in the season in much of the coastal zone you fool. We just had a shitty stretch of bad weather leading up to the opener this year.

Don't worry, by mid January all you late season advocates will find something to bitch about, and it most likely won't be that all the ducks showed up at the tail end of the season. The late season ducks (mallards) don't show up in force anymore to carry the end of the season

I'm trying to figure out which crowd is more entertaining, the hard core dog games lab crew, or the group promoting these non-traditional breeds that own them and don't hunt or have only been around one dog of that breed.

OP, do your research and get a lab from a good kennel with a breeder that will support you through the dogs development. The duties you need completed are ideal for a lab or other flushing breed. And I don't think you should give a shite about the color of the dog, they are supposed to be black anyways

More about the dogs heart than its physical size to a point. I have seen 40 pound dogs that didn't have an ounce of quit in them and could pick up ducks all day everyday. I wouldn't let a 40 pound mother deter me from the litter if everything else checked out fine

To the OP, I have never been to Cheyenne Bottoms but seeing how much publicity it gets as a "destination" waterfowling area it would be far down on my list of places to target in Kansas, depending on what your expectations are. I do know that there are better resources than tigerdroppings for gathering info on out of state hunting opportunities. I would also try to avoid hunting anything the weekend that upland bird season opens, I know that the Great Bend area of Kansas get quite a bit of pheasant hunting pressure and lodging may be an issue trying to book this late. Honestly I would try to go in December if I was trying to go shoot ducks north of LA
