I had to bury my lab last night. What breed I should replace her with?

It will primarily be used for duck hunting with some occasional goose hunting. She will also do some dove hinting and possibly a little upland pheasant.
I had a chocolate lab I was very happy with. I liked the smaller size of the chocolates compared to the blacks and yellow labs. I liked the dark color of the fur and her short hair. I liked her natural love of water.
I was not a big fan of the shedding, the ear infections, and the desire to dig and chew. I know some of that is a given with any dog.
I know some breeds are more likely to be roamers and others are more home bodies, less likely to stray. I'm not sure a breed unlikely to stray would be a good hunting breed but, I'm willing to hear opinions. I have two boys and the dog will need to be good with them also.

Sorry to hear that! One of my hunting buddies might lose his lab. Some kind of timing the week of opening day.

Hard to beat a lab IMO. Great companions, great with family, easy to train. I can't really see not having at least one lab at my home.
Hope you and the mini purples are doing okay with the loss of your dog, that's always tough.

Doc, I am so sorry. Look into a British Lab. They are typically a little smaller, a little calmer, and a not as hard headed.
I have a British yellow lab that is just the best dog. He's a really good hunter and a great family dog. Although he sheds like a busted feather pillow.

I know there is no perfect breed just like there is no perfect gun. But, I wanted to see what knowledge and experience the OB could give me.

You can't go wrong with a lab, but if you're interested in something else to fit what I see appropriate for your lifestyle, check out the Deutsch Drahthaar. I bought mine from a kennel in Mt Pleasant, TX just N of Dallas. Very smart at a young age and they have a real natural ability to hunt/track just about anything you could think of. Great pointers naturally, and great water dogs. Shedding is less than a conventional lab, and I don't see any signs of digging or MUCH chewing as a youngster. Higher energy than a lab, but they're absolutely born to hunt, so it is to be expected. I show off the breed a lot because I love the versatility and its important for myself and the DD association to get more dogs in the south with owners that will hunt them. It's a very close knit group of DD owners as well.

Sorry to hear that. I have 1.5 yo Boykin male (profile pic) and I cannot recommend the breed enough. Just because they are smaller does not mean less energy than a lab at that age though, FYI.

get a boykin spaniel. most loyal dog you will ever see. i work mine everyday and he is a bird retrieving machine. they wake up everyday just to please their master

Labradoodle, best of both worlds. They do not shed and are athletic, smart, and loyal. Sorry for your loss

DD are the dogs used by uglydoghunting.com. pretty cool.
How hard is it to keep that beard/mustache clean? they don't get all matted and nasty like schnauzers do they? I do not bathe my duck dogs unless they are sprayed by a skunk or roll in something particularly nasty.

Can your Boykin retrieve a Canada goose? I know my lab struggled with one when she was just 11 months old.

It gets a bath every time he drinks water from his bowl, so it's pretty much clean all the time unless it has dried mud or something in it.

no, it stays straight. Again, drool and water keep it pretty clean. I carry around a small towel to give it a quick dry when he's been drooling outside or just drank some water and I don't want it dripping everywhere. It's really a non issue and zero upkeep.

I just bathed him for the first time in about 2 months the other day and that's only because he's outside all day and the rain got my yard all nasty.

Sorry to hear about your lab. Sad times no doubt. After time a new puppy will help with the pain.
I'd go back with a lab. It's what you know and expectations are already set.! I just don't think you can find a better dog for the outdoors. We have a small black 45ish lbs. Also, we have a Golden. Great dogs, good family pet and hunts too. But nothing like the lab.

I've talked to your brother about it a few times, but I haven't had the chance to meet your dad yet. I've heard about his dogs several times and I believe him and I were supposed to do some training a couple months ago, but something came up. How is everything going with his new one?

She's got much longer legs but isn't quite as agile. He actually had to cut a small area of skin out of the first one's back and it turned out to be a malignant growth. So it's a good thing he found it early.
