I killed it in the TX Panhandle about a week ago. He's already at the taxidermist who had a different opinion than a professor at a university who specializes in these things. The professor requested DNA to test, but we have to wait on the taxidermist to get a meat sample after skinning it. The taxidermist estimates it will be about a year before he gets to it.

As to not influence the thread, I will hold off on revealing their guesses.

So, what do you think? What 2 species of duck mated to make this bird?

Looks like a widgeon/gadwall to me but who knows. Regardless, that is a damn fine bird and you are one lucky bastard.

Even though a drake Mallard will run his dick into anything that flies, that duck has no Mallard in it. That duck is a Gadwall/Widgeon.

There is a cool facebook group called The Hybrid Club. They post pics sent in of hybrids that they then identify and label. Seems like someone with knowledge is running the page.

Pretty cool, search for it on facebook and take a look.

That's the professor. He's at the University of Idaho. It's been posted there already...

That black, neck ring is pretty interesting, along with the brown, rather than green, crest behind the eye.

Gadwall and Eurasian Wigeon?

Edit to add: After thinking about it further, I'm not sure the crescent would be present if it were Eurasian Wigeon alone. Is it a double cross? A Gadwall x (American Wigeon x Eurasian Wigeon)?

Thank you.

I was super lucky. 3 of us are laid out in a goose spread on the side of a pond/tank with a few duck decoys on the water. I'm on the far right. A group of 5 gadwall come in and we work over all but one right in front of us. The last bird banked right and as it was leaving I took one final long shot. It fell so far right it hit the ground instead of water. I jumped up and said, "I'm going to go grab that bird I just shot so it doesn't run off." Lo and behold, it's a hybrid. Not a wing broken or much blood besides his nostrils. Perfect specimen.

The throat patch with the green/white stripe is why I said mallard
