Hunting board: Why don't people like Remington 1100s?

Our power is out this morning so there's nothing else for me to do and this has been bugging me since opening day of dove season when I heard some guys talking about it and have seen some smatter online about them......I just don't get it I'll shoot mine at everything but ducks
I get they aren't fancy or a "sexy" gun to use but the ones I have have just been workhorses for decades. I honestly don't know what the downside to them is other than if you don't own one already the purchase price and finding one

I used a LT-20 for squirrels and rabbits for years. Loved shooting it, but chose not to carry it for doves for a couple reasons. First, I wasted that third shot A LOT. I don’t have the discipline to not give the doves a going away present. And second, I prefer an O/U for the ease of picking up shells. They pop right out into my hand instead of being ejected all over the place.

My dad always called them jam-o-matics when I was growing up. I think someone he hunted with had one that didn’t function too well.

1) Remington quality went to absolute shite about 20 years ago after being sold to an investment firm and most guns they produced would rust if you looked at them funny, along with dozens of other QC issues
2) RemArms, the new entity, hasn’t made enough of them to actually have them in stock anywhere and seems to have paused production multiple times after saying they’re making them, which is highly suspect. Odds of getting parts are probably somewhere between slim and none.
3) No one bitches about 25+ year old 1100s and they’re somewhat sought after.
ETA: if any of your buddies have a pre-2005 3” 20ga they’re bitching about I’ll gladly take that PoS off their hands.

my dad had an 1100 and it was the first 12ga i used. i"m pretty sure it was my brothers first as well. it was chambered for 2.75, but we ran 3" through it no problem. i don't remember ever having any issues with that gun. it just worked.

I have one of those 20 gauges and several of the over 25 year old models.....may be the cause of my confusion. I'm not sure I've ever even laid eyes on one made after 2000

Because they never shot them. The downside is the dreaded O-ring gas system that can't be neglected. You have to clean them and keep a spare O right on you just in case.

I've had 12ga & 20ga variants, and the issue that I had was if you didn't meticulously clean it after each use, often the gun wouldn't cycle the next time I'd use it. So, I switched to pump action, then inertia/recoil operated, and over/unders. Haven't had the same issues since...

Don't get me wrong I clean mine fairly often but for instance I went through 4 different dove hunts with lots of shooting without cleaning it and had no issues......really more than they because one day I hunted morning and evening same place.....I wonder if the older ones stand up to it better than the newer ones and that's why the experience differs
ETA: cheaper shells could also play a role in this. I generally shoot super X's which aren't fancy but aren't junk either

These would have been mid-70's production 1100's. I got my first A-5 in '79-'80 time frame. So, I'm not sure what you refer to as "older"...
Same here for ammo, Super X & Remington Express shells

I had an 11-87 I bought in 1994 and it was a POS stayed in the shop and constantly jammed.
My pawpaw and uncles all shot 1100s and they never had issues with them and loved them. Granted they were all older guns without vented rib old.
I wouldn’t mind having an old 1100 for a squirrel gun but I’ll never go back from inertia to gas for ducks.

That would definitely fit the category so idk.....I need to look mine up and see when they were built I just know it was before 2000

tbh they just don't feel like "duck guns" If that makes any sense. Part of it may be mine are in really good shape and duck hunting can be rough on guns so I hate to even take them when I have other great options

My pawpaw would probably laugh if he was around to hear me say “duck gun” “Turkey gun” “squirrel gun” or “sporting clay gun” .
He hunted 25-50 days a year if I guess and he had rem 1100 12 ga and a colt sauer 270 and that’s all he used for everything.
