This happened in Turkey but the same safety rules apply here.

Be careful out there and please make sure the guns are unloaded before putting them in the vehicle.

Hunter accidentally shot dead by his own dog in freak accident (NYPost)

quote:

A new dad tragically died after he was accidentally shot by his own dog during a hunting excursion in Turkey over Thanksgiving weekend.

The freak accident occurred while Ozgur Gevrekoglu, 32, was pursuing game with his pals on the Kizlan Plateau in Samsun Province last weekend, Newsflash reported.

While the expedition went off without a hitch, disaster struck while the hunter was packing up to leave.

Gevrekoglu was reportedly putting his pet dog in the trunk of the car, when its paw inadvertently touched the trigger of the still-loaded shotgun, causing the weapon to discharge into the sportsman at close range.

The dog-lover was subsequently rushed to Alaçam State Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Same sort of thing cost Matt Branch his leg, and almost his life.

Unload your guns people.

I am teaching two young hunters we spend a lot of time insuring guns are empty

Is it a freak accident if it happens annually?

I would have to say that getting shot by a dog is a about as freak as freak accidents get.

I never leave the blind until my gun is empty. Just isn’t worth taking the risk. Tripping over something or whatever, and the gun going off. Takes just a few seconds.

Pictures show a dog box on the back of the vehicle, trunk doesn’t mean car trunk.

RIP.

Baws in hunting ...vehicles... come in all countries.

In that photo, does he have a clear shell inserted sideways in the action to show that its unloaded/safe?

Looks like it. I don't know if it's a regulation in Turkey but the shells I've bought that were made there a translucent. I assume so you can tell what shot size you have once the ink wears off.

?In the late 70's, my uncle was going to a duck pond behind boutte in the swamp. 12 year old kid used the but of a loaded shotgun to push a raccoon away from the pirogue . The raccoon pulled the trigger and kid died on way to hospital

I'm just impressed with the size of their wood cock, or whatever related bird that is, and the damn pile of them.

We only get 3 per person in LA.

Good looking setter dogs too. I hope he's not the owner of the dogs, because they may not get to go as much as usual.

Many years ago, after an afternoon dove hunt, my buddy set his shotgun in the back of the truck and his lab, anticipating "LOAD-UP", jumped in the back of truck, stepped on trigger, and busted back window out of z71. Talk about an OH shite moment.

Every accident I know of comes from unanticipated accidents involving guns that were loaded and probably on safe.

Two by dogs, one stepping on a trigger and one being knocked over in a duck blind.

One an gun that took a tumble down a railroad tressel.

You gotta unload em if you arent fixing to shoot. And dogs in blinds scares the shite out of me, rarely are they as well mannered as they need to be.

When I still worked in an ER 20 years ago, I had a buddy nearly lose his leg when his lab stepped on the trigger and shot him through the boat.

If you've never seen a shotgun wound from a point blank shot it it grisly to say the least.

Back in my deer dog and rabbit hunting days I was astounded at how many people never used the safeties on their guns. I would mention it and their excuse would be they didn’t want to be fumbling with a safety if a deer or rabbit ran in front of them.
I would demonstrate how I would take my safety off as I was raising my gun to my shoulder.Didn’t make much impression.

That was one big reason why I quit deer dogging and pretty much started rabbit hunting by myself and my dogs.

There are four universal laws of gun safety that everyone should follow.

In addition two more:

All weapons should be unloaded when a person is not actively hunting/shooting.

A person should always maintain positive control of the fireman.

Rabbit hunting always felt unsafe, but I was with a group of 5 or 6 every time, and we had defined rules. As a left it was easier because my finger on the safe kept it on. yeah i was slower to take it off but I was safe. Dad would randomly do safety checks and I never wanted to fail
