How to fatten up pond Bass and Crappie post-spawn
Posted on 3/25/21 at 7:47 pm

I have access to a great fishing pond and it's electric in the post spawn months, but many of the fish (mostly bass and crappie) are petty lean during this post-spawn time.
Is there anything I can do to help fatten them back up quicker to make for bigger fish? Can you feed bass and crappie like you can catfish? And if so, how often and what should I feed them?

Look into fathead minnows from Dunn’s fish farm or such, 10lb/acre

Golden Shiners from the hatcheries in Arkansas is one method.
I know two rich guy’s that put 2000#’s of crawfish in their pond each year. They buy them at the end of the season when the shells are hard.
The same guys and a bunch of others I know do throw dry fish pellets out of automatic feeders each day into their pond. The fish swarm them. And they are fat.
Google has a wealth of info on pond management. What and when to put in and what to take out.
Hope this helps and good fishing.
And fatheads like mentioned above my post. I think they are the most inexpensive but do the job. I couldn’t think of the name.

Can you feed bass
They love rainbow trout. Super smooth to swallow. Kind of expensive though.

Thanks for all the advice.

Give me the address, I’ll take care of it

Likely answer involves some plan to start culling. We had a study done years ago and that was as big a part of the plan as shad.

My brother has this same problem except they are skinny all the time. There are plenty of minnows and bluegill in the pond.

sounds like an overpopulated problem. Should take some fish out.

How big is the pond?
In my limited experience you can have a great bass pond or a great crappie pond but not both.

If the bass are super easy to catch you might have too many of them. Most ponds around here have to have the 1-3 pound fish culled each post spawn to make way for the bigger fish. You can buy shad/crawfish to stock the pond with, but those crappie are pretty high protein meals for the bass tbh

Crappie are one of the worst fish to have for big bass I believe, crappie just eat too much. They also say you should ever throw a crappie back because they spawn so well.

He needs to cull a lot of those small males.
Below is what I posted yesterday when discussing my 10.5 acre pit that’s on some property I bought 6 years ago.

That pit is just getting right. We had to take several hundreds of pounds of smaller bass out the first 3 years and we put a good dent in the sacalait each year where they don’t get out of control. 3 years ago, after culling the shite out of the fish, my 2 brothers chipped in and we stocked it with some F1 bass to go along with the good bass that were already in there. We also stocked with a shitload of bullhead minnows. The pit had been there almost 20 years by the time I bought it and already had big bass in there. The first 2 years we caught several fish 6-8#. The third and fourth year I owned it we caught a couple 9s and this last year we caught our first double digit bass out there. My older brother caught an 11.14 and I caught a 10.7. Had a biologist say I may get some up to 15# but I doubt I’ll get one that big in there. That 11-13# range in a pit my size is about as big as a couple might get and that’s fine with me. I can’t remember how big the F1s are supposed to get but I know they grow pretty fast the first 3-5 years, usually spawn good and are aggressive. They’re a Florida and norther largemouth bass strain. I’m not 100% sure what strain the bigger females we caught out there are. I’m guessing just a regular SE strain large mouth.

This is correct and if you’re trying to create/ maintain a trophy Bass pond, keep every sacalait you catch. If not the sacalait population will explode and they will eat everything. They eat the shite out of bass eggs, baitfish and everything else.
Sacalait are hands down my favorite freshwater fish to eat but they will absolutely ruin a bass pond. Especially a smaller one

How big is this pond? Probably need to go slay a bunch of sacs to keep them in check
