I’m not much of a fisherman but this morning in Lacombe I hooked an eel. I kept it just to show my son when I get home, but what should I do with it?

Pics brah!

Also, I’d have probably cut the line. Going up to cape cod, gonna fish a bit, and eels are the go to bait. I have an irrational fear of them.

I've caught my share of them over the years when fishing the Miss. River and have never kept them. The ones I've caught were not all that big to begin with, maybe 2 ft. long and about 1 in round. They are slimy as hell to fool with too and a PITA to get off the hook unless you have a flipper handy.

I do eat Unagi in the sushi restaurants though, and love it.

pretty amazing life cycles that eel you caught was born in the far north Atlantic and made its way all the way here

I have it in the ice chest with crabs & fish but when I get back to BR I’ll snap a pic. I’d guesstimate that it’s about 1 1/2 feet long

American eel are a species of concern around the country, with most fishery agencies within their range researching the population. Perhaps contact LDWF to let them know where you caught it.

When we were kids, we swam in old farm pond. I felt something brush my leg and grabbed it, thinking it was a piece of weed. Pulled up a wriggling eel (which I first thought was a snake).

I let it go real fast, and I think I walked on water getting out of there.

Cut it up and use for trot line bait.

They are very thick on Old River in Pointe Coupee parish. Running trotlines, I always catch them.

Probably not an eel; rather, and amphiuma tridactyl. Really an aquatic salamander.

No, this is an eel - it has fins, not legs

Those things will bite the shite out of you just FYI. Me and my friends use to catch those things in the ditches and the bayou that ran through our neighborhood. We caught some big ones over the years

Cut it into 3/4" squares and it's the one of the best catfish baits you can use. Especially on trotlines.
