Chest height is also the same as the barrel of your gun when shouldered.

Not knowing where his hunting partner was could mean he didn’t know he was 100 yards to the left, of he didn’t know he was standing right next to him.

What of the shooter is tracking a running pig through the scope firing and tracks all the way to his left where his buddy is feet away? Similar to duck hunting accidents

I bet he shot at a moving bush and there was no hog anywhere around.

People admit to this every few years, and the authorities will say it was a "terrible accident" and not charge the shooter.

I'm glad to see the authorities in this case are not just dismissing it like, oh well, hunters get shot sometimes.

Maybe this will make some idiot make sure that a sound or movement is really a damned deer or hog before he pulls the trigger.

A chest high shot could be possible if his fried was bending over due to branches or brush.

Happened twice around Alex back in the 70’s. Two brothers died years apart in squirrel hunting accidents while climbing a fence. After the second died it was determined their father had killed both for their life insurance policies. One was a friend of my dad who he worked with. Another unsolved to this day shooting happened at saline, guy was shot out of his climbing stand. The shooter helped him get on bike and pointed him to the road. Guy lived but it’s easy to tell where he was shot.

I hate that he was charged for negligent homicide. Probably fits by definition of the law but to me it’s just a tragic accident and society benefits none by charging him.

Society does benefit by sending a message
Just like when they charge an adult that leaves a gun where a child can get it and kills thenself or another

If he is out of woods we are all safer
