Hiking shoe/boot recommendation

Looking at a few since I’ll be taking backpacking trips this spring. The Merrell Moab 2 waterproof has caught me eye. What’s the OB recommendation?

Crispi is the best boot out there. No break in required.

I’m Not a huge fan of waterproof unless you’re in snow often. I wear Keens. Have done 14ers in knee deep snow in them. Never got a blister.

I wear La Sportiva trail shoes that I love. Not really a hiking boot/shoe (support), but much prefer them.

Trail runners with some rock protection are preferred for most hiking now.
What type of hiking are you planing?

Try on several. Lots of good boots out there.
Your toes shouldn't dig and your heel should be locked in.
I wear Lowa but I had never heard of them before until I was trying on boots.

Yep, been elk hunting in em for 3 yrs now...
Now even back home in LA I wear them whenever humanly possible to hunt. I only opt out if I absolutely must cross knee or deeper water, otherwise I’m wearing my gtx

I wear high cut boots. Usually Danners.

If you have a narrow foot check out oboz.
Every boot mentioned is good, just try them on until you get the one that matches your foot.

Great Boots. Glove Leather insides are awesome. I've put many miles on 2 pair.

I use cheap walking shoes.

Although I prefer approach shoes rather than true trail runners. These are some of my fav's (meaning they fit my foot - and everyone's foot is different) Salewa's, LaSportiva's, Scarpa's. These 3 happen to be Italian designed so maybe they're similar and that's why they work for me.
I'd keep an open mind and try on a few of the above (from everyone's list) except the more traditional styles unless doing true winter/snow camping.
Gore-Tex has adherents and detractors mainly centering on the shoes ability to dry. Some say breathable fabric shoes don't dry overnight as well, so they tend to be wetter. And I usually don't use on short 2 day trips in the summer; however wet weather, winter, or longer and it's GT for me.

Lots of dudes on the SEAL Teams use the Juxt 7000 by Vasque. If those guys use them, then they're probably bulletproof and comfortable. Never worn them but they're about $100. LINK
The only downside I can see is that they're low tops. If I'm hiking, I always want high ankle support. Back in the day when I did a lot of hiking, I'd go to an outdoor/show store and just try on everything to find what was most comfortable and what didn't rub.

Maybe they've changed...
..but worn two pair of those out in no time flat. They both blew out on the outside where the ball of your foot flex's or bends. Where the toe cup and material meets. And yes they do feel great and they had good support and yes Vasque usually makes a real good shoe.

I have always loved Timberland. For some reason, my feet just love them.

I had a pair of Wolverine boots once that were incredible, I wore them almost everyday for 2 years working in power plants and shipyards, incredibly light and comfortable walking and working and climbing on steel all day. I've looked for another pair of those, but I guess they quit making that model.

I’ve been through a lot of hiking boots over the last 10 years. If looks and weight are not an issue, Merrell make a great boot so you’ll be fine with that purchase. Merrells have outlasted some much more expensive boots of mine by a year or more. They’re not the prettiest and trendiest designs, and they’re always a bit heavier than their competition, but they are very durable.
I will recommend it’s you do not need waterproof, don’t get it. They get very hot.
