Beetle spin is one of my favorite baits for fishing Bluegill, Lake Runners and Knothead Bass. My only problem is I cant seam to cast it further than 20 or 30 foot. I want to set up in a boat run and sling it as far as possible.

What set up do you use to fish with lighter baits and still get a good casting distance? Rod legnth, power, what type of string, what type of reel?

I'm thinking of going back to what I used a kid, an old push button on a pistol grip handle rod.

I bought a ~$40 Shimano rod/ spinning reel combo at Walmarks that will launch a beetle spin. Have had fun with it this year

I have it on either a 4'6 or 5' at the moment. I'll try it out on a longer rod.

Add a split shot or two in front of the BS to make it heavier

Seriously?

Doesn't your kid mind you using his rod? Sorry too easy

I have 2 4.5' rods for bluegill. They work great for slinging under trees

Make sure your ultralight reel is full of new mono. I prefer 4# for bluegill.

Get the heaviest beetle spin you can find for the body size you want. Probably 1/16th or 1/8th oz.

You can throw that over the pond and into the woods on the other side

The rod will be the most important thing. Doesn’t need to be expensive but does need to be lighter power, slower action, and longer. Think about the setups you’ve seen to cast light crappie jigs, or a fly rod. You don’t need something 9ft long but the principle is the same, length and loading. If you want to keep it simple just look at the lure weight rating on the rod and pick a range your beetle spin is near the top of.

Second behind that will be lighter line that doesn’t drag much against the guides. 6-8lb mono would be my choice, but that’s up to you. Reel is less important but a smaller spool diameter will help.

Do you have enough line on your reel? If you don't the drag from the spool can significantly decrease casting distance.

Spincast is what I would use. What I use for all my bream/light tackle freshwater setups. Can chunk it far and control placement with your thumb just like your baitcaster

Spinning reels to me are for saltwater just chunk it far scenarios

I also make my own. Buy my own spinner, jig heads and soft plastic bodies.

Really like the 1.5" pan assassins for the body.

Thats mostly what I use it for, but when I move out into the lake I want to chunk it down the boat lanes I don't get much distance.

I'm going to find me a 6' to 6-6" rod and try it on that.

Someone asked about how much line I had on my spool, I have my spool filled almost to the top, about 1/16" from the edge or the spool like it should be. I actually went respooled it for a trip Sunday.

When I was a kid I fished the creeks of the Homochitto a lot when we had a camp up near there. I used a closed face Zebco 33 and could sling that bait pretty far. In the areas that i needed a further reach I added a small slip shot.

I have a Zebco Micro 33 with 4# mono. It's on a 5.5' medium rod, nothing fancy. I have been putting the hurt on Goggleyes slinging the H&H Cajun micro spinners. I can cast it pretty far. If I need a lil more weight, I just go up one size on the jighead weight. Cain't bet those ole Pencil Sharpeners for perch jerkin.

This. The best braid for this use is Sufix Nanobraid. If you want absolute maximum, buy Nanofil, which technically isn't braid.

Let it hang about 6" down from the end of the rod. I get more distance that way.
