I couldn't even imagine how I would feel.
I was part of a safety group at my last job and we attended a conference in Dallas. At certain times you could go hear talks put on by guys and I attended one by a buy who got shot in the face by his own son by accident while hunting.
It was pretty rough to listen to his story. He ended up blind and it took a while for him to fight through the depression and shite. Both he and his son were pretty messed up for a long time.

Almost lost one foot and my other side big toe when I got stabbed a couple of times by a bottle while I was trying to choke this dude out. Didn't go to the hospital and definitely should've. Didn't stop bleeding for maybe two months and didn't stop oozing for another three. Nasty stuff.
Been shot at three separate times, but never hit

I was duck hunting with a buddy off in a slough off of the red river and my buddy shot me....I got hit 10 times total...6in my right leg, 2 in my left leg, one in the chest and one in my left hand...out of the 10 bb's that hit me only 3 went in...which they are currently still in me and that was 14 years ago.
Kinda funny story to that...went to the hospital and when we walked up to the reception desk they lady told me to hold on...I told her "ma'am, I just got shot by a 12 gauge shotgun and I'm not hold on!!!" She freaked out...there were about 15 people waiting to be seen and I went back first lol.
For a while there I had problems sleeping because I would think about what if I got hit in the face, it still bothers me sometimes thinking about it today.
Out of the 3 bb's in me 2 are in my right leg and re really close to my nerve that runs down the center of my leg...occasionally if I scratch my leg or bump it on something I can feel the top of my foot tingle...which is an odd feeling

I got shot by a 20 gauge rabbit hunting. Had on an orange hat but I was behind some thick stuff and the guy couldnt see me. I had on a carhartt jacket and 2 pairs of pants because it was cold and none of the shot made it through my cloths, but I had plenty of bruises. It was like getting shot with a paintball gun.
OP, you're a lucky man.

Shot in my head with a BB gun. The BB is still in there, right next to my optic nerve. Docs tried to remove it but didn't want to chance me losing my eyesight.
My brother shot at a piece of steel plate with a .22 and it bounced back and hit me in the hip. It went through my belt and pants. It hit my hip bone and bounced off. It was my brother who shot me with the BB gun too.
Nether one of the shots hurt, at first. I couldn't even feel them. All I could feel was the warm blood on my skin.

I got peppered when I was dove hunting. It stung and bruised me but that was it.
I was also drying my socks and shoes by a fire when my friend threw a shotgun shell in it and it went off. A piece of rock or lead is still in between two of my toes.
nothing serious though

After getting shot I started hearing about all if the close calls people I know have had. Almost all of them were accidents were they person who was shot was wearing some sort of orange. One guy got shot 3 times with high brass #6 from 10 yards. They cut open and counted the pellets in one and multiplied it by 3, by that calculation only 17 pellets missed him. I'm definitely not the only blessed one out there

We were done hunting and driving out. We had taken off our orange. We saw some hogs and bailed out chasing them. Some bad decisions on my part put me parallel with him and I had on a black shirt. He was shooting at hogs in between us and when they got even with me he mistook me for one of them through some thick brush. All happened in about 45 seconds. More mistakes on my side than his.
This is a prefect example of why you never fire your rifle unless you've 100% clearly identified what you're shooting at and have a clear field of view between you and your target. If you see something moving in some thick brush you wait and either let it walk or wait for it to come out in the clear.
You're very lucky to be alive. I've used a 7mm mag for years which packs a bit more of a punch than a 7mm-08, but still is similar. The wound cavity these rounds create are just devastating and usually immediately fatal.

Yes there are dangers but you're more likely to be killed driving home this after noon than you are to be killed while hunting.

A friend of mine was killed in almost the same exact scenario as you described above. His brother pulled the trigger and has never been the same since. That was slightly over 19 years ago.

I've gotten peppered by lead shot while rabbit hunting. Dug it out of my wrist when I was 13. You're lucky to be alive, man. Glad you're okay.

T4, you were really lucky. None of the dozen or so animals my youngest son has shot in the neck with that caliber walked off. Best wishes healing.
My freshman year at LSU several guys I worked with and I were hunting off the Amite, and one of them shot at moving bushes he thought was a rabbit but turned out to be me. I was sitting cross legged with my gun in my lap. There were 17 pellets in the stock that would have otherwise likely affected my ability to father children. Highest impact was several in the collarbone, but none to the face. Doctors counted somewhere around 150-160 pellets in me, not counting a few near the surface they dug out right then. Messed up my right hand ring finger and tendons on my left foot, but overall, I was pretty lucky. Still carry well over a hundred #6 lead pellets in me-always causes a stir during x ray sessions.
Guy that shot me was pretty freaked out, and didn't hunt for years. And I became an advocate for hunter's orange (this was back when we hunted in flannel shirts or olive army surplus jackets-Bill Jordan was likely still in puberty. So yeah, my sons went to hunter safety classes before they shot anything above a Red Ryder
