So your first option would be to tuck tail and run.
If I have the option of getting out of a situation without having it get violent then yeah, my arse is tucking tail and running. I'd prefer to not end up in a gunfight or a fistfight. I guess the guy didn't think the jackarse captain was going to board his boat over that sh*t so he kept fishing. His mistake was expecting a psycho to be reasonable. Once the guy boarded I think he actually handled it well because both of them went home without injury.

Yep, anybody that carries a gun regularly should be prepared to “tuck tail” so to speak and try to deescalate things. It’s better to look like a wuss than to have to kill somebody and face potential legal repercussions.

quote:The kid wasn't jawjacking. Capt Insano pulled up on him and starting bitching. Brock was acting like an unhinged lunatic. The kid was in a no win situation there. If he shuts up and says nothing, Brock would still probably have come unglued because he'd have felt disrespected that the kid was ignoring him. Kid tries to tell Brock that he's got the wrong guy and the boater who didn't have his lights on in the dark was someone else, Brock still comes unglued.
The 22 year old didn’t “stand his ground”…you obviously have no clue what that means in a day to day context nor legally. He jawjacked with Captain Insano until Captain Insano boarded his boat, intimidated his arse as he whined he was “just a kid bro”.
Put yourself in the kids situation. You have a psychotic a-hole in a complete rage that boards your boat. If you fight, there's a good chance of ending up overboard and then God knows what happens. At a minimum you're separated from your boat. You could end up unconscious in the water. Unhinged a-hole has control of the helm and can either run you down while you're defenseless in the water or take off with your boat. Captain Jackass also has 3 friends aboard his boat while the kid was alone, so the kid has no idea if he was looking at a possible 4 vs 1 situation or what those other guys would have done if fists started flying.
Kid was in a no win situation no matter what he did.

Exactly. I became a major puss when I started carrying

quote:I assume the young man was on anchor which means he had very few good options that didn’t carry serious risk to him. If he were not on anchor though, or if he had easy access to the cleat, he could have slightly gained an advantage by motoring away from shitheads boat while shithead was illegally onboard. Especially since shithead really didn’t advance towards the young man and his personal space. Boarding another vessel at sea without permission is an act of piracy, and the capt of the boarded vessel has the right to defend his vessel. If it were me, and I was not on the hook, I would have motored away and given the idiot the option of going back to his boat, or taking his chances with me at the helm and in control of the vessel. that would have at minimum evened the playing field a bit
Kid was in a no win situation no matter what he did

This is the way. Carrying is for when violence is unavoidable.

I love that people are still calling this 22 YO a kid.

The first thing you learn about carrying is if you can retreat and avoid a confrontation, you do so. It can save you major heartburn and legally gives you a defensible position in the event an aggressor keeps coming.
If there was no way for the kid to slip his anchor and motor off, at that point he had the right through Castle Doctrine to defend himself through whatever means he thought would preserve his life.
No one knows if the aggressor had a knife, gun, or if he really is elite military as he claimed.
I’m not a lawyer, so perhaps I’m wrong….and I’m certainly not a bad arse. I’ve been lucky to have avenues of escape when I’m carrying, which is most of the time.
Having said all this, if I owned that boat and couldn’t get away, there is no way I’d let someone that aggressive on my boat. I would have shot that motherfricker instantly when he tried to board my boat.

Totally understand all that. Just remember what I was like at 22 and felt like a bull in a china cabinet. Everyone is built differently, physically and mentally. I know a few guys in that 22 age range that would have dropped him like a bad habit.

Quit calling the 22 year old who Captain Insano went off on a kid…he’s a full grown dude and sounded like a damn pussy.
I would love to see what a 22 year old you would have done alone in the middle of a body of water when 4 men double your age approach you.
—That was his reality. 4v1 against humans double his age.
The truth is that there are not many 22 year olds that will be a badass in that situation. Quit the victim shaming.

Guide needs to be punished in a way that will make sure he isn’t able to do this again.
The kid learned a good lesson. Don’t talk shite because you never know who you’re talking to. Could be a psychotic jackass.

Dude is 5'4" at best.
He'd talk a lot of shite and jumped in the water to get away.
