Anyone ever try redfishing with gold spoons? Never really tried fishing artificial, always had best luck with shrimp. But wanted to try gold spoons or spinnerbaits in marsh areas.

Thoughts?

That’s pretty much my go to bait. If it’s in an area that doesn’t have too much grass I use a Wobble Rite. I change the treble hook that is on it to one size bigger. If plenty grass, I use a Johnson Sprite. The gold spoon is what I have my most success on.

i always had good luck with them in the marsh and on the beaches. Obviously, live bait always works best.

It's probably one of the best and most universally accepted artificial bait for reds in the marsh...

Just a Johnson Gold spoon is all you need.

spinner bait is my favorite bait for reds. If it's clear enough that is my go to. if not, shrimp under a popping cork

Do you keep the skirt on the hook? I've seen some guys remove the skirt and replace with a soft bait.

I've had success with them, but haven't done very much redfishing in my life. That will all change starting tomorrow. I'll be in the ascend, throwing this guy

Nice gold color.

Johnson weedless spoon is the best redfish lure (overall), however, black is the best color. It's actually platinum color, but it works even better than the gold spoons. I use the 1/4 ounce size mostly, but the 1/2 ounce works well too.

I personally like throwing spinner baits. Someone asked about taking the skirt off. Most redfish spinner baits come with plastic tails, not like the bass spinnerbaits with the skirts. Try "Redfish Magic", Booyah makes a good redfish spinner as well, and there is one called "Red Daddy". Most bass spinnerbaits cannot hold up to the abuse a redfish will give it. The wire is too thin. I like fishing them because of the way reds hit it. It's VERY unusual to have a red hit a spinner and not get a great hook up, because they knock the shite out of it. With the spoons, they tend to suck it in, which if you're not used to it, you may not realize he has it. A lot of spoon caught reds get it way back in their crushers, and if you want to release it, you may not have the choice, as it will be mortally wounded. It'll have blood coming from it's gills when it hits the deck, and you might as well put it on ice...cause it's too far gone.

In that case, you might wanna bring dead shrimp under a popping cork. They do have some nice reds there, but it isn't like Delacroix/Hopedale or other areas. You gotta work for em a little more there.

If you can jump across Rigolets pass to Lake Catherine, the eastern shoreline holds some good reds. You can catch trout and flounder in the mix as well.

Spoons are great for blind casting and covering lots of area. I like to add a swivel and an o ring to give the spoon a little more action. If you do this make sure your o ring is strong, if not it can straighten out on hook ups.

One thing nobody's mentioned...and probably deserves to be in the mix.

Just a jighead with a plastic. 1/4 ounce jighead with a paddle tail plastic of some sort, preferably with a chartreuse tail. Purple/Ch, Root Beer/Ch, Glow/Ch, and Black/Ch are probably my favorites. To me, that's the best lure for sight casting.

i do that sometimes, but i feel like having that spinner right next to it greatly attracts a red.

Anyways I'll be in Leeville tomorrow throwing a spoon. Spinnerbaits haven't come in the mail yet
