Is it legal to land a plane on a gas line?

Our hunting lease now has a new gas line through it. It is the line that come out from Norco area across I-12 and up into Mississippi.
One of our members has a nice plane and flies all the time. He has checked the pipe line out several times since it was finished up there and says his plane could land and take off from it.

No power no water but we can fly into it

Should be 3-4' of cover over the pipe. I'd worry more about it being wet and the plane landing in tractor ruts. Name a pipeline you've seen that's as smooth as a runway?

I happen to know one of the 2 guys that inspect all of the airports in the state. I will ask him tonight.

Your idea of a nice plane and mine are not the same. I would not land a nice plane on a pipeline. I have been on some landings on gravel roads, levees, and just pastures and it isn't all that fun.

Not a big deal. Wind draft from tall timber adjacent to LZ may be a factor. I would need to drop in and see what conditions were before I commit to putting the wheels on dirt.

I've seen camps with landing strips but none were on pipelines, and they were pretty smooth.

I've never been on a pipeline that I would feel comfortable landing on, but I have certainly not seen all pipelines.

I have landed on tops of levees and turn rows too.

If I were the pilot, I would thoroughly inspect the area from the ground before I attempted to land the first time.

I'm gonna text my instructor and see what he has to say, even though I already know the answer. I'm still pretty touch and go on my touch and goes.

Eta: what kind of plane we talking about here?

Exactly, I would land a small cessna on it if the conditions were ok, but certainly we aren't talking about a dual prop king air.

plane similar to this

He said he thinks the pipe line should be fine but I too have seen my share that get all rutted up. It is a new line so as of right now it is nice and pretty. Probably just high hopes on his part.

I know I would not be the first to test it. What worries me is what if it is fine today but next time out some ruts have formed from surveyors or local yokals.

Well, if it is that plane that is a Mooney acclaim and they run upwards of 400K used.

So in short, no I would not land that plane on a pipeline, but hey, not my plane, not my money.

You ain't going to hurt the pipeline. If a D8 dozer doesn't do damage a plane won't.

Tell your friend to drive his truck to the camp.

Can you imagine how hard it will be to fly at night after downing a fifth of burbon to go shining?

Problem is they won't let you get on the pipeline with a dozer to smooth it out. Everyone we've done is rough on a 4 wheeler. What about the markers?

No way in hell I'd put that thing down on a pipeline. That's not gutsy, that's just stupid. I've never seen a pipeline that is smooth enough for me to trust putting a 4 seater down on.
