I have a duck spot that is a 20 acre gravel pit in TX, 10’-20’ varying depth, sand gravel bottom, no vegetation, and has had stained cloudy water for as long as I’ve had it. Ducks come to it for the natural grit.

Game Warden is convinced we are doing something in there to enhance the ducks hunting. The latest accusation was that I was putting clay in the water.

I answered No and then asked why in the **** would I do that. They did not respond.

What would clay do to attract ducks? Would that change the pH?

Don't know the situation at all but it sounds personal for the game warden. I would watch closely during season because it feels like he will bust you for the smallest thing possible.

Can you not put clay in the water?

Exactly. It is my understanding that a clay base is essential for having a good pond that will hold water.

That's what I was thinking. Most people I know with man made ponds have clay packed all over the sides to minimize seepage.

We go in and ride four wheelers in our duck pond a few days before the season to dirty up the water and break up the grass so it floats up... it seems to work

Pond has minimal seepage. Area not known for ponds that cannot hold water.

I think someone gave warden bad information and they had no basis for the question.

Document every time he comes out and the questions. Preferably record it.

Contact his superiors and ask how many times constitutes harassment.

I had issues with a gamewarden for a few years.

My solution was to setup a night time gun range on the back of the property and fire off random shots at night for months. He could no longer hear any gunshots at night from the adjacent state property and chose a new area.

Oddly, he was later arrested for hunting at night.

We now have an absolutely amazing game warden.

This. It becomes harassment at a certain point and it'll get dealt with, assuming it actually is happening a whole bunch.

First mistake. Politely inform them you will not answer any questions without the presence of legal counsel.

Reason being, you may end up saying something that "can be used against you" even when trying to "prove" you're innocent.

I grew up in an area with lots of gravel pits, they didn't do anything to make them hold water. They are in an area with lots of creeks and low marshes and over millions of years the gravel got deposited there naturally. In the past, they would pick a spot and dig gravel out as long as they could, until they filled up with water, or their equipment couldn't go any deeper, or maybe they got all the gravel they needed. once they were down below the water level of the surrounding creeks and marshes, the water is going to seep in, faster than it can seep out.

You know this was the first thing that came to mind in this situation. Warden may want to move in on the area

Texas game wardens must be pricks. I’ve noticed in LA, the wardens tend to worry about public land more. It’s like they expect you to be able to manage your private property.

Anytime questioned by game warden, while duck hunting, regardless of the questions, only answer like so.

Here’s my license, here’s my gun and here’s 3 shells.

Only purpose I know for clay in a pond is for lining the bottom in sandy country to hold water.

^^^This^^^

They asked me where I hunted the day before (I only had 1 duck and was almost back at the launch). I told him a general area because I just assumed he was making small talk. I hunted near a WMA but not on it, he gave me a ticket for not checking into/out of a wma. This was the day after I hunted and 15 miles away from the wma he mistakenly thought I hunted on.

The most frustrating thing is they won’t let me just pay the bullshite ticket over the phone, they are actually making me go to court over it.

put a game camera on your spot and make sure to hide it very well, sounds like this Warden has a hard on for catching you so you have to cover your arse.

1. Game wardens and state police dont make small talk

2. Wouldnt you want to go to court, I would go and challenge him to appear in front of a judge and defend that ticket..if you are being truthful he will have a problem.

I mean, the op didn’t admit to hunting on a WMA and green jeans didn’t catch him on one. I bow hunt a WMA and the line at one point is a creek you could jump across. So I could be perfectly legal sitting less than 10’ away. That’s beyond fricked up if true and is not what these guys are supposed to be doing.

I must be very lucky. Every green jeans I’ve come across in the field has been very nice and cordial. Here’s my license, everything is going well, have a nice day and be safe. Came across one in a boat while I was in my yak that had lots of questions about kayak fishing. Nice guy.

I’m 72 years old and have experienced many encounters with Game Wardens over my years with the exception of one all have been cordial. The one was a real smart arse and wrote me up for what both of us knew was a bogus charge. Even threaten to arrest me if I didn’t sign the ticket. He said I could take it to court if I didn’t like it. I did take it to court and the Judge threw it out which pissed off the Game Warden even more but it made my day when I looked in his face and just smiled.
