re: For runners: What/How do you carry when you are out running?

I think a lot of people are missing the point here. As far as the "if you need a gun you shouldn't be jogging their to begin with" is concerned, those safe neighborhoods can very easily become dangerous when criminals realize how safe you feel there. In a populated area you might be fine. But I've started runs in town before and ended up way out in the country.
Also, as a jogger you are probably considered an easy target to begin with since the average person isn't going to be carrying very much stuff with them. In a criminals eye they might figure they don't have much to lose by going after you.
I haven't carried while running before but I have been considering a belly band or something of the sort for my LCP that way I could. . I don't feel comfortable at all running with it IWB. But my holster is also cheap so it might make a difference.

when you're running, you really are an easy target, and simply just from a mugging/theft standpoint you are probably in $100+ shoes, and chances are you have a smart phone on you and/or an ipod, and even the most "tactical" people sometimes lose themselves in their exercise routines compared to when they are walking about the city with their family.
If you think about it, you're going to be a bit more fatigued that you're attacker, yeah adrenaline will kick in and alleviate some of that but if it becomes a prolonged attack/defense scenario you're at a disadvantage.
I live in a relatively good area, but I also run on the levee from time to time to get me out of my small neighborhood subdivision, and its an eerie feeling when you run a little further than expected or mistime the sunset and there are those dark areas along the way and you wish you just had something to defend yourself if the need arises.
Call me paranoid, call me a crazy vet that thinks I need a gun all the time, w/e. But all it takes is one time for something to happen and you wish you had something, be it a gun, knife, or something else to defend yourself with and it will be at home, sitting in a safe or a drawer and not on you. What good is it there?

(almost afraid to admit this these days) Many moons ago, I carried a little Saturday Night Special Jennings .22 semi-auto when jogging.
It took a while to figure out a system that worked. I had a little clip-on nylon holster clipped to a BDU belt. My t-shirt covered the piece. the nylon holster was safety pinned to my shorts to keep everything from bouncing around. A piece of Aggie Engineering, but the best I could do.

The only thing valuable on me when I run are my shoes and my watch. And if some thug wants them, I'll gladly give them to him instead of creating an altercation.

I'm pretty confident I can out run most thugs
Like I said, I never carry, I think guns can cause a relatively harmless altercation into something more. Unless you carrying 100%, then you are not protected. You will be vulnerable. I just assume use my awareness and have faith in humanity a bit. If some thug shoots me in the back while I'm running, then so be it, nothing I could do.

People ALWAYS assume you have to draw when you carry and are faced in a situation no matter what. That is not the case.
But this is a definite truth:
Carrying = you have options
Unarmed = you have no options

I agree my life isn't worth a small piece of property either. But it's a shame that criminals can just take what they want, when they want. All it does is feed their victimizing mentality and keep them doing what they have grown up doing - taking from others.

It boggles my mind that people want to run for leisure.

I probably run more than most on this board, and I was thinking last night of times that I've felt uneasy while running.
Honestly, it is dumb rednecks that have always given me the hardest time while I run. It seems douches in jacked up trucks just love heckling runners.
- I was running once in a bit of a ghetto area, and all I heard from a house was "Yeah you better run white boy". I picked up the pace to get off that street
- I was running one morning in the dark, and a young, hooded "urbanite" approached me. I was a bit uneasy about this, but he just asked me for the time. I then felt bad for sterotyping
- I was running on a trail, when 2 older white women approached me and said "Excuse me sir, I don't mean to alarm you, but there are 2 black men up ahead on the trail." I thanked them expecting to see 2 thugs hanging out on the trail, but instead it was 2 old black guys in running atire...running
- I was hit in the face with a half eaten Big Mac by some white trash while running alone a highway.
- I've been called every type of derogatory term for a homo that you can imagine. Most of these were by young white men.

Yea, competition in here is pretty thin.
I'm not one of them, just for the record...

And this is news?
I do it, but in a good-natured way.

Why would you run through there? that's asking for trouble and you should always be familiar with the area when you are that vulnerable.

just asked me for the time
He was asking the time to try and pattern you for a future robbery.

Sometimes I used to just start running down streets that I didn't know and try to discover new areas. I don't do this much anymore now that I have a family, but when I was younger, I would just start running without knowing where I was going. It definitely wasn't the smartest thing I've done.

Either that or he was planning on robbing, and asking me the time was just to get me to stop/slow down, but then he noticed I didn't really have anything on me, like a phone or iPod.

Yep, them and their dogs. And anyone would be a fool to ride their bikes in redneck GA where I live, a local jury would probably rule it to be suicide rather than homicide after the fact.
The wife and I used to run from the LSU lakes up through downtown Baton Rouge and back and the route took us through poor black neighborhoods at times. We never had any trouble since it was usually around 6:00 AM on a Saturday or Sunday morning and nothing was stirring. One time a homeless guy did ask for change and I just laughed and said "does it look like I'm carrying any change"? He just laughed and shook his head.

Yea, Im sure everyone on this board can outrun a black male teenager.

But in all actuality, you were more than likely targeted at that moment, approached, made contact with ("Yo, what time ya got big dog")and then the approacher realized you had nothing of value and nothing happened.

I've run my whole life and I don't carry. I like to travel lightly and don't carry a phone/music.
Kind of like Salmon, I sometimes run with no route in mind and explore a little. One of the few times I wish I had been carrying, it was because I saw pigs on the levee.
I stay out of bad neighborhoods when I'm running. I've cut a few runs short when I was traveling and found bad areas near the hotel.
Spin-off: Who carries when they travel by air? (I imagine most of us have a gun in the truck when we travel by car.)

Even if I could beat them in a 5k, that won't help a bit if they catch me in 100 yards.

I (along w/ a whole bunch of others) would if it weren't illegal.......Since it's not yet illegal to cc when I run, I will do so under using my best judgment. That's all most of the side discussion comes down to: someone beign allowed to use their best judgment to do what they think is best indicated. Unlinke some, I wouldn't presume to tell someone I know what's better for them than do they; I also see no reason to insult people merely because they handle the situations discussed here different than I would.
