My dogs rarely get fleas, so I haven't bought anything in awhile. Is the vet still the only source for stuff that works, or is there something at Petco/Petsmart/Tractor Supply?

They sell all the major brands at box stores. If you can wait, 1800petmeds will save you some money.

eta: I haven't given my dog flea medicine in a couple years so I'm not sure what's good.

Been very impressed with the sorresto collars, available on amazon. I have two labs and one will let me know real quick if she has fleas, three months in and no scratching or rubbing on furniture.

Most vets have very little markup on these products. Just go there. Plus they know way more about them and can offer help if any issues come up.

My vet uses Trifexis and my dog has been taking that. However, I may be looking around for other flea/tick/heartworm medicines. I recently talked to a guy who put his 4 yr old dog down due to cancer. He said cancer probably linked to Trifexis. Has anyone heard of this before?

I second the Seresto Collars. My MIL is a vet and she gets them for my lab. Absolutely zero fleas since using the collar.

I do know that the Fipronil based products (Frontline) do not work for my dog. He was infested recently even though I followed directions to a T. Brought him to the vet because he was overdue anyway for his visit and the vet agreed that fleas have grown immune to many of the over the counter stuff. He gave me a years prescription and within a week my dog was basically flee free.

Going to piggyback off of this and ask for the best liquid or granular whole yard insecticide for fleas.

The neighbors on both sides have confirmed their dogs have fleas. I want to carpet bomb my yard so i dont end up in the same boat.

What ever happened to "dipping dogs"?

When we used to keep 6 bird dogs and a lab that was quite the event a couple times a year.

I had that problem once. I bought something from a home store you attach to a hose. I waited for him to go out of town, and sprayed his bushes and as far into his yard as i could get. My dog never had another flea at that house.

K9 Advantixx 2, seresto, frontline can all be found at the big pet stores and online. They all work vast majority of the time if applied correctly

For the yard I would use a mixture of Suspend SC and IG regulator. You spray once, wait 14 days and spray again. The stuff works great. I forget exactly why you need both but there is a reason. Maybe one kills adult fleas and the other stops new eggs from hatching?

Advantage II works well.
Fleas do not disappear overnight, but they move noticeably slower within a couple of days and are usually gone within a week.
