Fishing has slowed down some there. I'm sure it could all change tomorrow.

To answer the OP. I'm not sure up in Tamarindo. It's north of the places I've been. I hear it's an awesome surfing spot though!

I've fished w Maverick fleet in Los Suenos (41 sails in 4 days) and another outfit in Quepos. Both really good trips.

ETA- update as of today One of the boats w Maverick caught 8 sails and a marlin today!

Like I said, it can turn on at any time.

I saw DT had a nice sailfish he wants on the wall. For anyone interested in replica mounts for trophy billfish or anything for that matter, you can't beat King Sailfish Mounts down in Ft Lauderdale. Here's my dads Marlin replica from them. This was the fish from CR and it looks killer at the camp.

Los Suenos is the damn bomb. We caught 10 nice sails and fished for marlin for 4 hours.

Is Los Suenos just the name of the resort? How affordable is to stay there and play golf?

It's a resort/marina/few restaurants and I'm sure some other stuff. Jaco is only 10 mins away but pretty seedy, which is why I would recommend it for a bachelor party or guys trip. Los Suenos is much different, no clue what it costs to stay there but the greens fees were $150 when we were there.

I was in Costa Rica two weeks ago for my bachelor party too...

OP - We didn't fish but we heard a lot of poor fishing reports. Any of the outfitters out of Los Suenos should do well.

Enjoy

Maverick out of los suenos is hard to beat for sails, we caught 27 in two days on "the bite" had "Spanish fly" booked as well and they caught 16. Truly amazing trip, friends have been back several times since with similar results. We went in march/April timeframe which is supposed to be best for bills.

Went to tamirindo 3 years ago and exactly how others described, lest developed resort town with local vibe.

it's a nice marriott hotel and condo community to stay but it's not cheap and has a very US feel to it. 30 dollar breakfast. tourist trap, but theres enough avid fisherman with large bankrolls to support it

Stayed in a friends condo. Nice doesn't do it justice. The minute you get off the resort you are in a different world. We had a guy, Fonzi, that took care of us. Drove us where we needed to go and got us to The air port and back. Great guy.

My wife and I stayed in los suenos. We fished w epic charters, we had a great time. We caught one big sail and lost another. Could've caught a million yellowfin I think we caught 8. I'd recommend getting breakfast at the little place in the marina, the Marriott was super overpriced for meals. Also, the Japanese restaurant in the marina did a pretty good job cooking up some of our food. Hit up el pelicano in jaco as well, they had good food.

Maverick was the best but was booked a we did just as well with epic boat. Split the boat with another guest and I think it was 350 or so. We could have caught 20-30 sails but a sister boat hooked a marlin so used half a day to try to get one two. Still ended up hooking 12 landing 10 with Two over 200 lbs.

If u r staying at Marriott do the meal plan. The food is rediculous priced. I think the meal plan was like 150 a day for my family and our breakfast was that

There is a guy that went to LSU that has a charter fishing company in Quepos we fished with. It was like half price of the Los Suenos boats and we caught a ton of sailfish. His website was www.QueposFishAdventure.com .

There are snook and other fish on the beaches near rivers, it's fun to bring a small rodnreel for that. Don't expect to buy one there as you will pay 100 bucks for a zebco.

Any advice on lures and techniques for this? I've never caught snook.

there's a small river/estuary on that beach, walk down to the mouth at daylight and see if anyone is fishing, ask when the best tide is and what's biting.

I'm not a snook person but a 1/4 oz jig head and a gulp shrimp or curl tail, shiny mirrolure, or a gold/silver spoon would work.

I know there are 3 OBers in Costa Rica right now fishing
And one of them is a charter himself down here, so he should have some pretty good recommendations.

Here is a pic from their trip. They shouldnt mind me posting with their faces cropped out I wouldnt imagine.
