What is the importance of fishing major and minor times? Heard a ton of people say this means a lot but I’ve had more luck just fishing at the crack of dawn.

Should I plan my fishing trips around these times?

Salt water fish bite is more due to current moving.

Freshwater, never really paid attention to it.

Just another piece. There is definitely something to it but not end all be all.

I look at it but I don't put any faith in it. My priorities are: wind speed and direction then chance of storms then barometer then I might glance the solunar thing but just as a reference point but it's hit and miss. I need to keep a record since I fish so much and do a little data experiment.

I’m still skeptical but 2 weeks ago we were fishing and buddy was talking about it. I shite you not 5 minutes into the “major” we had all 4 rods hooked up. Caught 12 yellowfin in maybe an hour or two.

Kind of a believer now but time will tell

For freshwater especially but all fish to a large extent, barometric pressure is by far the best way to call a bite. A hard falling barometer is the sign of incoming frontal activity, and fish will be active hours before and up to the point of the front passing overhead. On the following high pressure days they are going to be less active. This is especially true in the spring where a couple days of increasing temps can push fish up shallow to spawn, peaking with the morning or afternoon of the front being one of the best trips of the year, to then have a clear and cold next day where you swear there’s not a fish in the lake.

Years ago, I kept track of major/minor times while hunting one season. Never did see a deer at those time, but did see deer at other times.

Then a few years ago, on 2 different hunts, the major time was right at noon. Both hunts I killed a deer just at the start of the major time. I hunt on WMA's.

I have never used this info while fishing.

The biggest thing that will affect a morning bite around here is the full moon. If it's a full moon, the shad and striper are hard to locate and catch in the morning because they've been playing tag most of the night. Regardless of any other reading or metric.

When the barometric pressure exceeds 30.29, fish like there’s no tomorrow. The rest of the time is just casually enjoying the outdoors.

During the late summer months, I bass fish the majors and minors. More often that not, I catch at those times. Although I don't claim that's the main reason. Can't catch'em on the couch!

Now that I have an easy to use app, I try to pay attention to it. So far, I see no real patterns in fresh water for crappie. For bass, the days labeled poor, have been pretty poor.

solunar-foercast.com

put the zip of the area fishing or hunting and see if it works...I use it...
sometime it's dead on...other times not so much...

I feel like those are just calculated guesses, based on wind, tide, and all the other factors that go into fishing.

It's based on solunar positioning. I don't think wind or tide has any contribution to calculating the major and minor periods.

Wind and tide do play a large part in fish location and activity however.

If you can correlate the two along with other factors it helps to increase fish catching ability.

Notice all 4 rods are tight lol. Literally right when the “major” started Probably just a coincidence but I’m going to start paying attention to see how it lines up with catching vs not catching.

Outgoing tide + Full moon + major times = HogZealot is fishing.

I caught more than 15 snook in 1 hour this past winter. I believe in it. No slobs but they were smashing it like no other time I’ve been alive. I was hooking up every other cast at worst.

For trout fishing in TX solunar is a big deal. Fishing guide I go with is adamant that you arrive at spot you are most confident in based on prevailing conditions and work it thoroughly during major/minor.

I caught PB 29” 7.75# trout with him during a mid morning major. So I respect the process.

If you pass by a field full of cattle and they are all laying down resting - no deer and no fish. You see them all get up and start feeding, get ready.

Makes you wonder if we (humans) didn’t become so used to eating at regular intervals, if we would be affected in the same way. Me - my stomach starts rumbling just before meal time like clockwork.

Lol! That reminded me of my youth at deer camp. The old men would look at the Brahma herd in the pasture next to the bunkhouse and if the cattle were laying down at 3pm, they’d say, “ I ain’t hunting this evening, damn deer ain’t moving.” Fun times.
