My chances of being killed in Baton Rouge are a million times higher than being killed in the woods by a bear.

Fun fact:
In the US more people are killed each year by falling trees than by bears.
On average in the US black bears kill 1 person per year, while brown bears accounted for roughly 24 deaths between the years 2000-2015, equating to about 1.5 deaths per year.
If you take all bear species (brown, black, and polar), you average less than one fatal attack per year.
Falling trees or tree branches on the other hand kill over 100 people per year.

You’re either a liar or insane.
I’m going with both.

Bob Robb would be wrong…
I wouldn’t know any better.
I was on a hunt with him on Kodiak and he was a blast to be around. We hiked out of camp the first morning, Bob, myself and the hunter, across a wide valley and then up the side of a mountain.
About two hours later we were up on a high ridge looking back over the valley we’d just walked through earlier. Bob had his spotting scope up and told the hunter to come take a look. I picked up my glasses and could see a bear down in the valley, nose to the ground, headed our way.
The hunter asked Bob, what the bear was doing. Bob replied…tracking us. That was the moment it got real for this Louisiana boy. LOL

I enjoy going to Arkansas and swimming COE lakes without having to think about gators. Snorkeled right through huge patches of weeds without any anxiety at all.
Though I'm sure the feds would love to stock those lakes with gators too if the water wasn't so cool.

I find it hilarious that people in Louisiana where we all are programmed from birth to look down for snakes every step and we all know somebody that got bit anyway if it's not you yourself and to avoid ALL the North American worst spiders and has most of the bad mosquito born illnesses, lyme disease, brain eating amoebas, flesh eating bacteria, tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding, a place to drown every ten feet, and some absolutely hella crazy crime from truly dangerous animals are suddenly pooping themselves over a statistically less likely threat than almost all of those mentioned.
Man up gents. It's all trying to kill you and you're not getting out of here alive. Stop worrying about it. Be prepared. That's all you can be.

Because I am not scared of the low probability of running into a black bear in the woods? I grew up in the mountains in New Mexico, I saw black bears dozens of times as a kid, it wasn't scary after the first...they hauled arse almost every single time.
If I am in the woods, I am armed, so what should I be scared of? My 10 year old son has a bigger set of balls than some of the grown men here.

I find it funny that some of you are either so lacking of reading comprehension skills or are so insecure that you purposely misinterpreted my point. No one is soiling themselves. It’s simply an observation that both people and animals have become too comfortable with each other. It’s not gonna work for either. Humans absolutely have to have a respect for the animals- don’t feed them, don’t try to take a selfie with them, don’t try to swim with or pet them. But those same animals need to have a fear (respect) for humans. Hopefully we leave each other alone and neither gets hurt because one is trying to eat
The family dog or one is tying to save the family dog. Or pawpaw as was the case in the OP.

its fine because he was old anyway. oh and he had his doors open with food inside. Basically asking to be killed.
Whole lot of "if it didn't happen to me or mine then idgaf" in this thread.
There are lots of ways nature can kill. Not sure I understand why adding to those ways is a good thing.

And I'm not sure why we have to prioritize extreme outliers for policy decisions.
If you enable the government to have more power it comes at the expense of your freedom. Period.
How about we let the biologists make suggestions, leave the histrionics out of it, figure out what works best for humans but still maintains a healthy, respectful population of animals. Measure that over the years with data analysis, and adjust accordingly?
We don't have to go all Nostradamus meats Cocaine Bear here.

In the last 8-10 years chasing woodcock or going to or from isolated wood duck holes - we've encountered roughly a dozen bears - all ran away with prudence - especially wanted no part of dogs - except for one collared and tagged big fella - he ran about 50 or so yards and then stopped and made it clear that the dogs best leave him be.

I know I don't know what kind of stupid point he though he was making
Obviously if you going to swim and snorkel you are going to Hamilton, Degray, Ouachita, ect. I guess he figured I thought every Arkansas CoE lake was somehow devoid of a single gator.
Interneting is hard for some people
